I spent the week getting the house and yard ready for my reception for the officers and appointed members of my team. Herb and Lannie came over and we set up the sunshades, tables, bar and anything else we needed to do to get ready. Greg arrived with the refrigerator truck and we loaded the water on board for the hospitality room. Greg and Lannie then set off to deliver the truck to the hotel and get the power set up. Sisters Sandy and Linda arrived and cut vegetables, melons, sliced meats. Linda busied herself scrubbing walls and cleaning up where my ineptness in housecleaning was most obvious. Wendy joined us and the preparation was completed. Wendy left for the hotel and I planned to follow but Sandy and Linda decided that we should rearrange the setup of the backyard and we rearranged the layout.

I left for the hotel just after 6PM with a trailer full of supplies and items for the hospitality room as well s my clothing for the week. There were many Early arrivals at the hotel and photos just had to be taken of the "working president" - still in sweat pants and a dirty T Shirt. We had some help unloading the trailer then I slinked away to my room for a shower. I felt mush better (and probably smelled better as well) and headed down to the lobby area to meet and greet early guests.

I had forgotten the printed directions to my house as well as my regular glasses so I headed back home to retrieve them and decided to leave the trailer there even though I would need it the following day. While there Trever called and we arranged to meet a the hotel so he could deliver the keyboard. I then worked with Dave Repp to download the U-tube videos for the banquet. Finally went to bed about 1AM.

I woke at 5AM (damn), showered and ready for the big day and the reception at my house. I first drove out to the Susie Irvine Golf tournament to greet the hackers then back to the hotel for the Corps of Corps meeting. I started the meeting as Hexible then turned the meeting over to Claude Nelson before heading home. I picked up my trailer and then to Wally's Rental for the chairs for the reception. Linda and Sandy were the first to arrive followed by Wendy and Denise. Everything was in place by 2:30 PM so we had a short time to relax a bit before the first guests began to arrive. We quickly filled the back yard and everyone had a rousing time. I did interrupt the frivolity for a short time and presented my year end Coins to all the officers and appointees present, thanking them for their service to the US Senate this year. Most folks left just before 6PM and a few remaining folks helped to load the chairs into the trailer and generally clean up, wash serving utensils and get ready to leave for the hotel and early hospitality. We had a taco bar and what a great meal that was, snacks and pies followed and the bar was busy as usual. Another late night.

Denise and I made the rounds of the early committee meetings then met with US JCC President Elect Joanie Cramer who joined us at the Presidents meeting and first time Senators meeting. After lunch I attended the Future Directions committee then scooted into my final Executive committee meeting with the outgoing officers and appointees. We had a short time to visit the hospitality room then lingered in the hotel lobby when walked in a Klingon Warrior and the Duras Sisters - my you should have seen the looks on the faces of the hotel staff and some of the guests in the lobby. They were associated with a fan club and were there to judge the Regional booths. I quickly went upstairs to get dressed for the States Party. And what a party it was. I was in awe of the ingenuity of the regions. There were transporters, the bridge of the enterprise complete with crew, even the original Captain Pike was there.

We had Romulin Ales, Klingon Blood Wine, Cardassian Kanar, Saurian Brandy, Aldorian Ale, Gorn Balls, Tribbles and many other out of this world treats and everyone got into the act. I even won a purse and shawl in the raffle. Considering the number of reffle tickets I bought I figgure they cost me around three hundred bars of latinum - but all for a good cause. After the party I went back to the room to change and was waylaid by the Region 8 folks who lured me into their lair where I was served voluminous quantities of champagne and left over Cardassian Kanar. I finally escaped and joined the folks for a game of screw your neighbor. Then some much needed sleep.

I rose early and had breakfast with the Krekorian crew. I followed them to the Golf course to "Bless the Balls" and helped the ladies set up the lunch room for the hackers return. My next task was to return home and retrieve the trailer of chairs for return to Wally's rental. Then a stop at the Trophy shop for the Awards before heading back to the hotel. I arrived in time to attend President Elect Joanie's first training at 11:00 am and we were joined by an impressive group of Senators. She was very open with the current state of the Jaycees and some positive steps to improve the membership. There was much discussion on what would be the most effective ways for the Senate to help. I attended part of the Foundation meeting and presented Earl withg one of my flag stancions holding the American and Missouri Flags. That evening I participated in the Foundation Auction where I purchased an old Star Trek Phaser game. Of course the evening continued in the hoapitality room with conversation and games until the wee hours.

I awoke for a busy day. Showered and dressed then went down for breakfast before attending the Memorial Service at 8:00 AM. In addition to honoring our departed Senate friends there was a special memorial to Past President Allen Pierce. Quite moving especially since his wife Connie was there with us. The Business meeting followed and as happens with the best laid plans we did not finish before lunch so I recessed the meeting at noon to be reconvenied at 1:30PM. We reconvenied and I presented my year end awards before the elections of the 2010-2011 Executive Officers. Elected this day was Mike O'Connell as president, Steve Sutherland as Administrative Vice President, Dawna Gruver as Secretary and Bruce Geddes as Treasurer. The meeting was adjourned before three PM. Joanies second seminar convenied at 3:00 PM and was very well attended - she again was very open and many ideas were discussed. The final item on the days schedule was the Incoming Executive Committee meeting where I attended as C.O.B.. The evening was free and many Regions and/or States went out for dinner together. The California Group, of Course, remaibned and manned the hospitality room.

I and Wendy picked up incoming peresident Mike and First Lady Kathy and escorted them to their first breakfast meetibng. Kathy was escorted by first lady Wendy to the First Spouses breakfast while I escorted Mike to the Past Presidents breakfast. I supplied him with the appropriate footwear and he performed his tasks well serving the past presidents. I delivered Champagne to both breakfasts although there was a bottle of Bailey's that macically appeared at the Past Presidents breakfast.

I attended Joanie's final discussion at 12:30 on Thursday where we again had a good turnout. These discussion meetings were a last minute idea and we managed to schedule them in so most everyone would have the opportunity to attend. I was very pleased with the number of folks that attended and participated. We did not solve the ills of the Jaycee organization but those that attended came away with a better understanding of the current status and the steps being taken to reverse the decline. There was also many good ideas on the best course of action for the Senate and Senators.

My sisters and friends joined my presidential assistants to pepaqre for the reception in the Hospitality room and continued serving champagne to all the guests. I and Wendy stood at the start and had the honor of greeting every guest as they entered. It took quite a bit of time and not everyone was able to sit and enjoy the food and drink before having to get to the banquet room. I should have allowed at least an hour and a half for the reception. I had planned to give my special gifts to my traveling companions at the reception but ran out of time.

We all then lined up for the introductions into the banquet and Idonned the Presidential "Chain of Office" that Earl Sawyer had made for us just before the introduction of Wendy and Myself. Jaws fell as folks noticed the chain. We took our place at the head table amid resounding applause. Do I feel worthy - not really - but do humbly appreciate the love displayed.

I was so honored to have Dave Hood there to sing the National Anthem for us, what a great voice he has. He also sang a couple of songs while desert was being served - one "If I had a Brain" as a spoof on why in the world would anyone want to do this!. The second was "If I were King" Again what an Honor. Denise and Joe A were the Masters of Ceremony and did a teriffic job of planning the script intersperced with humor and a few good netured digs. We were honored to have Rene Jacobs, president of the Canadian Senate and Barney Ziols, Treasurer of the Canadian Senate with us. Our Friend from the UK, Chris Read who is also ambasador to the Americas from the European Senate also joined us for the weeks activities. The Ambassador to the Americas from ASAC, Ray Bratwaite honored with his presence as well. Special guest US JCC President elect Joanie Cramer and husband Tom honored us with their presence as Joanie led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag of freedom.

I did have a chance, although not in the script, to present a few special gifte, To Joe A, a Jack Daniels flask with a nip of JD Reserve and a collection of uncirculated states quarters. To Jeannie, Denise and Wendy Necklaces that I actually picked out myself which were just a small token of my appreciation for their travels over the last four years. Words cannot fully express my appreciation for all they have done for me.

On to the Memorial Awards. These were the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make. Even worse that chosing who to let go when I was a manager of a large staff. By the reaction of the crowd, I think I made the right decisions. I did manage to surprise a few folks.

Katina Repp did a wonderful job for the slide show covering the years events in a short 20 minute presentation. It was time for my last address to the US JCI Senate as president and I was over whelmed by the audience as they applauded after my conclusion. I am not sure if it was what I said or the closing - I had a video of the "fat Lady Singing" before pronouncing that "it is now over" - it did bring a laugh to many right away and some after they realized what had been done. A memory that will stay with me forever. C.O.B. Pat Hoelker presented me with flags from the US as well as California that had been flown over the capital. Star Trek memoribilia and my very special [past presidents ring and pin.

California Senate president CJ Jorif then served me with a divorce summons issued by Sandy McManus concerning the unreconcilable differences between myselff and Wendy Bell. I did retain custody of Denise although Wendy had visiting rights. Well done by all.

I then administered the oath of office to newly elected president Mike O'Connell with Kathy by his side. Mike then gave his incoming speech and inducted his officers and Vice Presients. The Vice presidents then came forward (again not in the script), joined me in a circle around Angie Struttmann while she sand "Proud to be an American". A moving song and the entire audiens stood and swayed to the music. WOW!!!

The meeting closed with Kathy O'Connell leading us in the Jaycee Creed. The decomissioning of the Starship USJCI38 is complete. Another non scripoted event was the first "Passing of the Chain". Where two chairs were placed in front of the head table for myself and Mike. All the past presidents came forward and "passed" the chain of the office of president from my shoulders onto the shoulders of Mike O'connell. Thus a new tradition for the US JCI Senate was born.

It was now time to don the Shirts for the new administration and join everyone in the hospitality room for our last night together before headinh home. Our next meeting will be in September in Bloomington.

We were up at 4Am (getting to be a habit).caught our flight through Denver to New Orleans. Mark Conti picked us up and delivered us to the Intercontinental hotel. We met Newton as we checked in and after unloading our luggage into our room we joined the Jaycees on the third floor. We met many Jaycees and the first timers were anxious to get my signature. We then sat in on the US JCC Board meeting where we found that the Jaycees had changed their meeting dates for next June when we planned to meet together. After the first shock we determined that it would still allow us to meet although we would not share meeting days. The Jaycees would meet from Wednesday through TOYA on Saturday while the Senate early hospitality would start on Sunday. Something we can probably work out. The hotel restaurant did not have much interesting on the menu and the prices were pretty steep. We heard about a local establishment and walked to Mothers restaurant. It was local food and very good - price was also right. Returning to the hotel we changed into our formal gear for the Awards ceremony where I had the opportunity to join 2009 president John Webber in presenting the RTF Award.

After the ceremonies we had a drink in our room with Newton and Carol then to John Webber's suite for his reception. We then changed into casual wear for the 2011 onto Chicago party - $9 for a drink (gulp) needless to say we only had one drink before retreating to bed.

We slept in a bit and I did not get to the Jaycee meeting when I was expected to speak. Newton covered my butt and thanked the Jaycees for a great reception. He then called me and I scooted down just in time to hear Joanie's election speech and see her elected as the 91st president. President Jeff spotted me and invited me to speak to the Jaycee membership. I was certainly honored to do so. I remained in the area after the meeti8ng and visited with many Jaycees. It was an honor to have so many other Senators visible for the Jaycees to visit with. Newton and Carol Standridge, Joe A Souza, Mike Sawyer, Travis Boatright, Ron Whitmore, Steve Sutherland, Kim Newlin and myself.

We had lunch at a local deli and I had to have a Mufletta sandwich for which New Orleans is famous. We returned to the hotel and met up with Travis who had the supplies for our reception for the Jaycees. He had forgotten the wine at home so he and I headed off to WalMart to correct that oversight. I had to get to the 3rd floor as I was supposed to meet Raj and go over the US JCC Foundation but he did not show up. I did have the opportunity while waiting to visit with more Jaycees. At 2:30 Newton and I met with past president John Webber, Current President Jeff Lank and President elect Joanie Cramer to brainstorm areas where we can be of mutual assistance and improve communications. I cam away with confidence that we can assist the turnaround in membership..

Back to the Crew Suite provided by Kim Newlin for the US Senate reception for the Jaycee Executive teams for 2009 as well as 2010. Carol Standridge and Becky Newlin did an outstanding job arranging food trays and serving wine, soft drinks, beer and water to our guests. We had a grand showing of Jaycee officers attend. I gave out my coin gifts and Jeff presented me with a nice gift as well. The Ladies closed our reception while I went to President Jeff's suite for his reception. We then met with the Iowa Jaycees and walked to Gordon Bierch for dinner together. We returned to the hotel and my first Crew meeting where I was introduced as a new member. We enjoyed the comradeship until time for bed.

I joined the other Crew members for breakfast in the hotel restaurant and we had a great discussion of the Crew's history. We adjourned to a meeting room where our discussion centered on better communication between the Jaycees and the Senate. There was about an hour of free time then I attended my first meeting of the US JCC Foundation for which I will serve as a trustee for the next year. Raj rode president Jeff pretty badly during his presentation to the foundation. The meeting went a bit longer than anticipated and I missed Joanie's election celebration. I again donned my penguin suit and visited the Crew suite for a cocktail or two before heading down to the TOYA Banquet.

We were assigned to a VIP Table which we shared by past TOYA Recipient and son of Nevada Senator Chris Mumm. It was an impressive ceremony with 8 of the 10 awardees present. There was entertainment by a local singing group delivering many do-wop songs of the 50's and 60's. I remained in the area to visit with some of the Jaycees before changing into more comfortable garb and again visiting the Crew Suite to say our goodbyes. A short visit to the Jaycees dance then to bed.

I took the red eye special from SFO to Detroit. It was a pleasant flight as I sat next to a young lady from South Carolina who had graduated college and relocated to San Francisco. She was on her way to visit her parents. We did find something in common, both of us had a bronchial event occurring so we "coughed together" for the flight. On my arrival in Detroit I had to "hot foot" it to the commuter terminal but arrived in time to grab a cup of coffee before boarding the plane to Syracuse, NY. The coffee was much needed as it was 5:30 AM and I had only managed about an hours sleep on the plane. The weather was a bit rough going out of Detroit but mother nature smiled on us as we landed in Syracuse.

The weather held and I had a very pleasant drive to Kingston, Ontario, Canada. There was a short backup at the border but I arrived at the hotel just as the Senate tour was returning. I joined everyone for lunch then the afternoon was free. I had a chance to get the wrinkles ironed out of my shirts and grab an hours much needed nap.

The obnoxious alarm went off so I showered, which made me feel much better, then joined the group in the lobby. We boarded a bus which took us to Fort Henry and dinner at the historic "officers mess".

We were instructed to act as officers and treat the "soldier waiters" as officers of the period would have treated their servants. No Thank You or Please was to be used. Each able was assigned a "president" whose job it was to insure that the diners were of their best behavior and protocol. No elbows on the table, no talk of politics or loose women. Violators were charged with singing a song, dancing a jig or whatever the president deemed appropriate for the offense. I was charged with being the president of our table. I did excuse a few to go to the bar but required that they return with a drink for the president. That actually worked for a couple of drinks.

We returned to the hotel and the hospitality room where conversation abounded. I crashed around 10:30 PM.

Everyone met in the Island room for a buffet breakfast before heading to the Bellview room for the program and meeting. Senator Matt Hutcheson's presentation of "Down Memory Lane" was entertaining and brought back memories of the past. Matt is a recent Senator and a national president of the Canadian Junior Chamber. He recounted his days leading up to that position as well as his international experiences. Senate president Al Murphy opened his meeting and ran through the agenda items quickly and efficiently. Elections were held and Rene Jacobs is the new president of the Canadian Senate for 2010 - 2011.

We were then addressed by Ian Coristine who spoke of the beauty of the 1000 islands. He is an aviator and photographer and had published many books of photos covering the diversity of the islands. We then had to leave quickly to board the boat (Island Star) for our luncheon cruise of some of the closest islands. We had a nice cruise, a wonderful lunch and excellent friendships. we returned back to the hotel around 3PM with a free afternoon to wander the city or catch a nap.

The presidential reception began at 6PM where we all assembled in a more formal atmosphere. Pele Winery was present with a generous wine tasting event, perhaps a bit far from their namesake in Hawaii. I was honored to be seated at the table of the outgoing and incoming presidents of the Canadian Senate.
The guest speaker was Jack Chang his speech covered his adventures as a journalist and his journey into public service. His delivery was light hearted and humorously delivered. He had the audience in stitches most of the time. Dinner was excellent. The new officers were installed and the outgoing president Al delivered his final remarks followed by incoming president Rene and his vision of the new year. We adjourned to the hospitality room for the remainder of the evening.

Up packed and to the "Give a Damn" breakfast. During their memorial service I read the names of the 101 US Senators that have passed from this life as Ambassador Phyllis Bowers rang the bell in memorium. The mornings presentation was delivered by Debra Lefebvre who organized the Canadian Bed Nets program.

The meeting ended with all Senators "Walking the Plank". An interesting tradition of the Canadian Crew where the incoming and outgoing presidents and spouses line up at the front of the room. Every Senator and spouse then greet the starters then take their place in line to receive the rest of the members. This continues until every person offers congratulations and some small talk and hugs with everyone else in turn. Quite a nice way to end a function.

I drove back to Syracuse without incident, caught my plane and made my connection. I arrived home just after midnight, exhausted but pleased with my excursion to Canada. My thanks for all the hospitality of the Canadian Senate.

I can actually drive to a meeting. No airport hassles, no security lines, no little bags of peanuts. What a treat. I left my home on Friday afternoon and drove to Sacramento Airport to pick up Jeanne - Finally get to pay her back for all those airport pickups on the east coast. We had a quick 10 minute ride to the hotel and arrived in time to check in, unpack and meet the group for dinner. The restaurant was just across the street and we had a large group of California Senators there. The evening was very busy with the California Jaycees Board meeting just after dinner, followed by the Tiger Corps board meeting immediately after. I did get someone to bring over a glass of JD in time to get to the Tiger general meeting and elections. We had some fun during elections and nominated pretty well everyone in the room to a position, Our mode of elections is for everyone to go to one of the walls to vote for the candidate of their choice. Much bantering as folks move from wall to wall with the encouragement of the opposition members. After all the dust settled the serious candidates won, of course. A quick trip to the hospitality room for some serious BS then to bed.

The Senate breakfast meeting convened at 9AM with the necessary business conducted. Then to the serious stuff - Elections of officers for 2010 - 2011. The position of president was contested hotly and the candidates all made their plea for the office. When the dust settled Clarence CJ Jorif was elected our new president. This was, again a busy day as the California Jaycees foundation Trustee meeting was convened right after the Senate meting. Most of this discussion concerned the rental/sale of the office building that we own. Then to the hospitality room for the Concord 2010 convention committee meeting. Whew! there was about an hour where I could steal away to lay down for a bit.

Then it was time for the Tux and the Presidents reception to toast the 45th anniversary before it was off to the banquet room for the 45th celebration. Margaret Souza did a great job as Mistress of Ceremonies, Katina Repp summarized some of the zany things that happened since the 40th anniversary and we had a slide show of the past leading up to this point. I had the pleasure of addressing the group as US JCI Senate president. It was ironic that just 5 short years ago when we celebrated our 40th the speaker was another sitting US JCI Senate President - Joe A Souza. There was a champagne toast, gifts given and another short slide show celebrating this year and the Presidency of Karen KT Talamantes.

The old officers were excused from further responsibility and the new board was inducted. then we all adjourned to the hospitality room for a few toddies, some conversation and a couple of games of hand and foot before heading to bed.

We all met for breakfast in the lobby and a short meeting of the foundation to discuss fund raising ideas. Then I gathered Jeanne up and delivered her to the airport then headed down highway 80 to home. Tired but it was a great weekend.

This is the final Regional Meeting for the year. Denise and I had an early flight so I got up early enough to kick the Chickens awake. Denise picked me up at 4:30AM so we could make or flight on time. We had a straight shot into Houston where David Ray met us and we stopped for lunch before delivering us to the hotel. He had to turn around and head back to the airport to pick up Regional VP Peggy Rider.

There were many folks checking in at the same time so we had a nice time greeting each other. Mike and Bruce came in on Thursday and were on the golf course, where else would they be??? The evening was filled with fellowship as more Senators from Region 8 and other parts of the country joined the party. Texas president David Johnson brought in some "take home" champagne glasses and was mixing many very interesting concoctions for the guests. Many of the drinks were pretty powerful and it began to show as the party went on into the night.

Around 10PM I joined the Rattlesnake Corps Commanders call as past Commander as well as Hexable from California. I gave my pitch for the corps of corps meeting to be held in Concord. Commander Dave Johnson gave us all some pillows in case any of us "old Farts" needed a nap. Back to the hospitality room until bed time.

Denise and I joined the group for breakfast then proceeded to the Region 8 meeting. Peggy ran a nice meeting, I addressed the group and Kent Singular, from Kansas was elected the new Region 8 Vice President. Denise was on the agenda to promote the Concord meeting and veered from the planned talk to announce that she had decided to challenge Mike and run for president of the Senate. This surprised Mike at first as it did myself since this was not something planned. Denise and Mike had been bantering each other, in a friendly way. This generated a lot of excitement and everyone joined in the fun. Folks were donating money for her filing fee and campaign expenses. Denise printed a filing form and filled it out so she had the form and fee for Steve. States were promising their votes to Denise. Mike made a call to Jim Mammon letting him know of Denise's candidacy and wanted to know "What the hell is happening". Unfortunately Jim was not answering so Mike just had to leave that message fully expecting Jim to call back with some concern. This spoof continued through Sunday breakfast when Denise returned every ones money to them. Quite some fun.

After the Region meeting Mike and I attended the PIE meeting of outgoing and incoming presidents for a discussion on having a successful year.

After lunch the Texas Senate had their meting where Jack Cornutt was elected president for 2010-2011. I and Denise left the meeting a bit early as our ride to the Ship Channel Tour was leaving.

We arrived at the dock a bit earlier than expected but soon boarded the boat. The area is restricted so we all had to put our cameras back in the cars (although there were folks taking photos with their cell phones). This was a nice cruise through the shipping channels of the port of Houston which is 50 miles from the ocean and 25 or so from the bay.

It was pretty hot and humid on the channel so I took a nice shower when we returned to the hotel and felt much fresher. We arrived back at the hospitality room in time for a cocktail before heading into the banquet room. Gifts were exchanged and I had the honor of installing the new president and VP. We then had a bus ride to a comedy club for the evenings entertainment. The MC did a acceptable job in introducing the program but the first comedian really stank. He relied on way too many 4 letter words and was not funny. The second act was a much older guy and he was very funny. About the roughest word he used was Damn but he talked about life experiences to which we could relate. The third act was so-so and had some humorous moments. We returned to the hotel after midnight and had a few hours sleep

I caught the first train to SFO at 4AM for an early flight into Atlanta for a 3 hour layover. True to form Delta had a "maintenance problem" with our airplane and departure was delayed for 1/2 hour. Even with the delay we arrived in Myrtle Beach within about 10 minutes of the scheduled time. My friends and fellow Senators Walter and Niki Brooker were there waiting for me and we made it to the hotel. Niki is a transplanted California Senator who was whisked away to South Carolina when Walter wooded her into becoming his wife.

Jeanne, My companion and keeper for the weekend was already there and checked into the room. I connected with her in the hospitality room where there was already a great turnout. I renewed many acquaintances before some of the group convinced me to play a little "Screw-your-neighbor. I was quickly relieved of my money but since it was late and I awoke very early I hit the sack.

WOW! I slept until 9AM, I must have been more tired than I thought. I met some of the folks on the balcony and shared some conversation then some of us made a pilgrimage to the Hard Rock to contribute to the local economy. Seeing that it was past lunchtime we decided on a nearby Mexican restaurant.

We returned to the hotel with time to change into my Tiger Corps shirt for the Palmetto Corps meeting. I gave a pitch for the Concord Corps-of-Corps meeting then returned to the room to change shirts for the Region 4 meeting. Each of the Region 4 State presidents gave a synopsis of their activities for the year. Jimmy ran a nice meeting and stayed with the Regional tradition of short meetings. This was a first as the meeting was not conducted from the back of a pickup truck.

Dinner was a the hotel buffet then we returned to the hospitality room for games, refreshment and fellowship. I made my rounds saying goodbye to all my friends and headed to the room to pack and get some shuteye.

We were up early and off to the airport for my flight to Atlanta. This was a much shorter layover although there was still a long flight to get home - I finally walked into my home at 7PM.

What a change, The flight left at 9Am so we did not have to get up at oh-dark thirty. We arrived at the Boise, Idaho Airport and were greeted by an impressive welcoming committee. My entire Executive Committee; VP Mike, Secretary Steve, Treasurer Bruce and our shuttle pilot Will Hansen.

We loaded into two cars and drove for about 2 hours then stopped at Lardos restaurant in McCall Idaho for lunch. Another hour and we arrived at our hotel in Riggins. After settling into the room we headed to the hospitality room where we were joined by Jack Myers, no relation although when Jack was president of the California Senate I served as his Vice President and we were the "M & M Team". Past US Senate president Hap Hilbish was there to greet us as well as many long time friends from Region 9.

A short drink then it was off to Seven Devils restaurant for dinner just a few blocks from the hotel. Actually I guess everything was just a few blocks from the hotel. Although the food was great I think we overwhelmed them with our number. We were seated outside and the smell of the open grill made us all the hungrier. I assume that the grilling was the issue as the table that I was seated at was served dead last and many of the others had already finished their meal and were departing for the bar or the hotel. The ladies at our table of 7 were getting a bit cold so we moved inside to finish our meal in comfort. When we returned to the lodge we found that the hotel serves homemade cookies and milk every night and we did not refuse to partake of their generosity before trudging off to bed.

I sure wanted to stay in bed when the alarm sounded but we were up to join the others for breakfast. The Idaho Senate conducted their meeting at 9AM and president Aaron Reed ran a productive meeting. I briefly addressed the Idaho members and presented Aaron with my flag set and received some nice gifts as well.

After the meeting Aaron led 3 vehicles laden with the visitors up as far as we could go in the mountains surrounding Riggins. The snow finally got too deep to traverse. We stopped frequently on the way back to see the wonderful view of the mountains and valleys.

We stopped at the Rapid River Salmon Hatchery where we learned everything about harvesting and fertilizing Salmon eggs to the final release of the young fish for their return to the Pacific Ocean. Our guide was quite a character although quite an expert in this operation.

Back at the hotel we gathered a small group and walked to a local cafe for lunch. Then we had an hour to retreat to the room for a rest.

The Region 9 meeting began at 4PM, There were the usual reports then my entire team of officers presented their case to the members for electing them to their next office. Will Hansen was slated to be elected as the Region 9 Vice President but some of us could not let him be uncontested. I rose in nomination of Jack Myers, my illegitimate father with some raving banter about how great he was, Sonny Jones from Oregon, seconded his nomination. Jack then spoke of his qualifications (or lack thereof). We all had a lot of fun and the members present had a good belly laugh before Jack withdrew his candidacy. Will was unanimously elected.

Dinner in the hospitality room followed and conversations abounded, storied were told and lies were abundant. Finally everyone would down and it was time for bed.

Denise and I had a late flight out of Boise so we rose, packed and joined the others for breakfast. Mike, Steve and Bruce had earlier flight and had already left the hotel. We loaded our gear into Will's car for the return to Boise. On the way back we stopped briefly at Will's Mom and Dads home then drove to Table Rock to see the Jaycee cross. It was quite a hike to the top from the parking lot but we made it and it was a spectacular view of Boise. We made our way back to the car then to the center of town and lunch at Bitter Creek Brewery. Will then delivered us safely to the airport for our quick hour and fifteen minute flight home.

This was an all day trip from Oakland to Philadelphia but I arrived and was greeted by Larry Green who shuttled me to the host hotel. After checking into my room I joined the other MAI Senators in the hospitality room around 9PM.

I enjoyed breakfast with one of my east coast presidential assistants, Jackie Cornelius, and the Pennsylvania Senators. I had about 15 minutes to quickly check my emails before joining the Joe Sabella tour of Wilmington, Delaware. With us were Joe and Judy, of course, Mark Grim, Jackie Cornelius and John Robinson. We took the scenic tour (backroads) to Wilmington and drove around the campus of the University of Delaware. Quite a large campus with separate fields for Football, Baseball, Track, Soccer, 2 Ice Rinks and a basketball gym.

We had lunch at the "Big Fish" restaurant then drove through the neighborhoods, parks and even the "finer" parts of the city. We returned to the hotel a bit before 4PM. Jeanne joined us after a day at work.

Dinner was served in the hospitality room with plenty of food for everyone. Regional Caucuses followed where each of the candidates had their opportunity to make their pitch for the upcoming elections in Concord, California. I just had to follow suit and gave a pitch for the office of COB. This is probably the most difficult meeting for the candidates as they have to make their pitch twice as each region holds their caucus separately. The evening ended as they all do with lots of fellowship and conversation.

Breakfast was provided in the hotel breakfast room where everyone stoked up on Coffee and a bagel or two to gather energy for the business meeting. The meeting went very well as Roxanne, VP of region 2 and Elizabeth, VP of Region 3 shared in conducting the meeting. I kept my comments short as I would be speaking again at the evening banquet. I did present Presidential pins to Larry Green for providing my transportation and to Joe Sabella for being my tour guide the day prior.

The meeting was completed a bit ahead of schedule so everyone had a chance for lunch before boarding the bus for a tour of old Newcastle. The tour group broke up into two groups for ease of the tour. One group went through the old courthouse where we were guided by a great "Old Gal" through the history of Newcastle and it's founding. The second group went on a walking tour of the restored streets and buildings. After an hour the groups switched so everyone had a chance to experience the town and it's history. It was then back to the bus for our return to the hotel and a short time to get ready for the evening banquet.

We again boarded a bus for transport to Delaware Park, a casino and horse race facility. Jeff Lank, President of the US Jaycees joined us and shared our table. Jeff addressed the Senators as did I and our messages had a similar tone of cooperation between the two organizations. I received some nice gifts from the two Regional VP's, A bottle of Chocolate wine from Roxanne and a personalized placard from Elizabeth. State president Randy Manship presented me with a Delaware sweatshirt. I presented both Regional VP's with my redwood flag set and a presidential pin to Jeff Lank. Jeanne received some nice gifts as well for being the weekend first lady.

Upon our return to the hotel Jeanne and I went to the room to drop off our gifts when to our surprise we had another unique travel experience. Neither of our keys worked so off i go to the front desk to get them recoded (not so unique YET!). So neither of the new keys worked and I am off to the desk again. This time I request that someone follow me back to the room as I do not want to spend the evening between the room and front desk. When I get back to my room the maintenance guy is there with a pass key. Our new keys still fail to open the door and the pass key also does not work. Something serious is wrong with the lock and I am a bit perturbed about the situation.

Perk happens by and her room is just across the hall so we stash our loot in her room until the hotel works on a solution. Jeanne and I head to the hospitality room without having an opportunity to change into more casual clothing. I call the desk to let them know where we will be upon their repairing the room lock. I was informed that maintenance had the room open . Jeanne finds Perk and heads to the room to transfer the gifts. Meanwhile I meet my elected team and finalized the 2010-2011 proposed budget.

When I return to the hospitality room Jeanne tells me that they cannot fix the lock and we had the choice to move to a different room or have maintenance open the room when we retire for the night - we chose the latter. Jeff also joined the Senators in the hospitality room and seemed to have a great time. When we finished our goodbyes I went to the lobby to get the room opened. They had a difficult time opening the door again but finally we were let in.

We were up early so Jeanne could get back to Maryland as she had to work on this day. John Robinson drove me to the airport so everything is working well - WRONG!!

I had paid the fee to receive A-List boarding primarily since I would be in meetings when the time hit the 24 hour prior time as the computer would automatically check me in. I went to the Kiosk to print my boarding pass and I get a message that I had to speak with a Southwest representative. I was informed that I would have to get my boarding pass at the gate and they gave me a security pass. When I arrived at the gate I received a boarding sequence number of C-17 - The last person to board. I asked why since I ad paid the fee and received the standard answer that the computer erred. I am not a happy camper by this time so I asked to speak with a supervisor. The attendant quickly produced a blue early boarding slip and I got on the plane and more importantly had bin space. I arrived home on schedule

Best flights were on Wednesday and Denise and I had an afternoon flight. With a plane change in Las Vegas we arrived in Columbus, Ohio at 11PM. We stayed at a Airport hotel and finally got to bed around midnight.

We had breakfast at the hotel then caught the shuttle back to the airport to pick up our rental car. We then set out for our next mission. When we arrived at the airport we had noticed a poster touting the largest apple basket in the world and since we were at the largest wheel turtle in the world while in North Dakota we figured we should see this if it was close by. Google did not have much, just some info on Longaberger Basket Company but we did not put the two together.

Our final destination was Roscoe Village where we were to meet Patty Robinson who was to be out tour guide for the day. On our voyage to meet up with Patty we could not help but notice the headquarters building for the Longaberger Basket company as it resembled a large basket - complete with handles. This is the first basket I have seen that had windows. A short beam down the road was the Longaberger Visitor center so we made a quick detour, much to the dismay of the GPS. We walked through their gift shop, which was massive then outside to meet our destiny - The Largest Apple Basket - Photo opportunity for sure. Who would know that we would stumble across an image we saw in a poster. On our way out we were speaking to a group of ladies manning the visitor center and were convinced that we should take a tour of the factory. Being a bit short on time we declined but perhaps we might stop by on our way back to Columbus and the Region 5 meeting.

We mat Patty at the Roscoe Village Visitor Center and followed to her home where we had lunch then returned to the Visitor Center to begin our education. We watched a film about the history and building of the Ohio canals then since Patty is employed at the center she had a few tasks to complete before we got underway. Denise and I were treated to a tour, guided by a costumed guide, through the museum. Patty completed her tasks then drove us through the restored town, stopping in at a couple of quaint shops along the way. t started to rain a bit but we shuttled on our mission.

Patty took us through the back roads where the majority of residents are Amish. Although it was raining there were many buggies on the road as well as some folks tilling their land, Horse and Plow, of course. There were many farms with large barns and silos. Quite an interesting albeit more simple life.

Our destination was Lehmans, a store where if they do not have it you do not need it. WOW! what an array of STUFF. We purchased a few nostalgic items then into the car for our dinner destination Hot Rod City. An old Service Station, the kind that actually did auto repairs, where nostalgia took us back to the 50's and 60's. Memorabilia of that ere abounded, Old Gas pumps, metal motor oil, fan belt and radiator chemical signs. Even an Auto Parts counter with shelves of very old miscellaneous parts such as Radiator hoses, spark plugs and carburetors. Oh Yes! they even served food which was simple and of that era but good, We took many photos then the short way back to Patty's for a Glass of wine and a visit.

We awoke to a blanket of snow on the ground and a couple of inches covering the car. The new snow was beautiful but COLD! We visited a bit with Patty before setting out on our Trek back to Columbus. We again stopped by the Longaberger Factory and went on a tour. We watched as workers made a variety of baskets - all by hand. Dis a bit of shopping and received our free gift. I Rabbit shaped tea pot. We had some lunch then proceeded to the Columbus and the Crowne Plaza hotel for the spring fling.

After some time greeting old friends, Region 5 VP, Doug Dempsey, hosted myself and the 5 State Presidents for some candid conversation over dinner. Great idea and I enjoyed the discourse. We returned to the hotel and some fine Region 5 hospitality.

The days activities started with a Memorial Service to remember our friends and family that have left us. The Region 5 meeting followed with a room full of Senators. Reports on the years activities by the Regional Chairmen, a few comments from President Doug Meyers, a message from VP Doug Dempsey and the election of a new Vice President. John Voshel was elected for 2010-2011 Region 5 Vice President.

Lunch was served by the hotel then there was some free time before getting dressed for the evening banquet. The weather was quite brisk so Golf was cancelled although shopping was still an option for many and naps for others.

The elected officers gathered for the initial discussion of the proposed budget for 2010-2011. There were some suggested changes and we will have more meetings to come up with a realistic budget for the coming year. I had an hour or so to get my feet up and relax before getting ready for the Black and White Banquet.

The Banquet was well attended and conducted with a bit of humor while covering a planned agenda. I had the honor of addressing the group, Doug went over his year of experiences as pictured in the slide show. and distributed his gifts to his folks. After the banquet everyone gathered in the hospitality room for the final night of fun and fellowship. Goodbyes were offered as folks retired and prepared to travel home safely.

Denise and I spent most of the day at the COSI Exploratorium. We took in a program on Dolphins and Whales on their 7 story tall "Extreme Screen". There was an enticing exhibit on "Grossology" covering the science behind many bodily functions (Your imagination here). We went through many more exhibits before the staff started clearing everyone out so they could close.

That evening we had dinner at Schmidt's Restaurant and Sausage Haus in the historic German Village. The restaurant is located in a historic building originally a Livery Stable. The Schmidt family has served food since 1886. We stuffed ourselves on German food with various kinds of sausage, sweet and Sour kraut, German style potatoes and a few vegetables.

To the airport for our trip home. We had a flight that went to Oakland with two stops along the way. All went well until I arrived at the Oakland airport and my bag failed to follow me home. Made out a claim and at 1AM that next morning I had a knock on my door and my bag was delivered intact.

Slick picked up Denise, Wendy and me at the Phoenix airport and whisked us to the hotel where we checked into our room. Wendy's brother was in town so she went out and spent some time with him until he had to leave to get back home. Denise and I went to ten forward (hospitality) to greet the early arrivals and welcome folks as they all arrived. Some of the guests went to dinner although I had enough of the hospitality food so I was not hungry and remained with those remaining souls.

Saturday there was the Regional breakfast meeting where each of the candidates presented their case to the assembled Senators. Elections were conducted by the most current past Regional VP which is Clarence Alvey. Carolyn Smith was reelected as Region X VP for 2010 - 2011. After the Regional meeting the Golfers headed out to the course, shoppers went their way, and I joined Pat and Bob Holbert, Steve Sutherland and Doug White for a trek to the Phoenix Hard Rock. We did a pretty good job in contributing to the local economy with just that one stop. It was then over to the Holbert's home where we admired his vast pin collection.

We returned to the hotel were the group again split for dinner. Some folks wished to have a more relaxed dinner at a restaurant while others of us decided to visit the local McDonald's which has an informal car show, a la American Graffiti. There were custom cars and hot rods from many eras. They brought back some great memories of my youth. We had dinner a bit later at Sweet Tomatoes then returned to the hospitality room and some Screw Your Neighbor activities.

We met Debbie Steele and Her husband Jim at the hotel and went to Denny's for Breakfast/lunch. We were joined by a few more Senators and had a great time catching up. This was the first Time I met Jim and found him a likable man with a good sense of humor. They dropped us off at the airport and we made our flight home without incident.

We were greeted at the Omaha airport by Regional VP Randy Young's smiling face and he successfully shuttled Denise and me to the hotel. The rest of the "Bridge Officers" were already there. Two groups were in different areas of the lobby/breakfast as there were not enough seating in any one area. I spent some time with one group and them moved on the the other group until the hospitality room opened just before 5PM.

At 5:15 some of us gathered in the lobby to load up for the trek to a local Steak and Seafood restaurant where Randy had made reservations. Present for dinner was VP Randy and Debbie Young, Myself and Denise, Pat and Skip Hoelker, Steve and Dawne Sutherland, Nebraska president Mike Francis and his lady Robin. There was a special treat at each setting , a post card size Refrigerator magnet with VP Randy's logo that had been made for him by one of his clients. There was also a delicious caramel candy wrapped with his logo as well. We all enjoyed a delicious dinner and great camaraderie for the evening. We then returned to the hotel and ten forward (hospitality) for an evening of renewing friendships and pleasant conversation.

Breakfast was served in the hospitality room where chairman Marilyn had made up some special "Star Trek" waffles. The official proceedings began with a memorial service to remember our friends that have been taken from our family. The Region 6 business meeting was conducted efficiently with many reports given on the events and activities throughout the year.

Lunch was served in ten forward where Randy presented his final comments and gifts to the crew that has been instrumental in having a successful year in Region 6. The program ended with a slide show of the years activities and events.

At 3PM the Nebraska Senate 35th anniversary program began with a wine tasting from a local winery owned and operated by a Nebraska Senator. Most of the wines were a bit sweet for my palette but were thoroughly enjoyed by most. I did find an interesting Red Wine that I stuck with for the afternoon. Each of the past Nebraska Senate presidents were introduced and given a gift of a bottle of wine. The national guests were also introduced to the assembly.

ten Forward was closed for a short time to prepare for the Chili cook off at 6PM. There were many fine chili recipes to evaluate by each of the guests. Of secondary importance was the Hot dogs and appropriate toppings with chips, of course. There was plenty to go around and this also served as dinner for most of us.

The foundation silent auction was set up for folks to inspect while other meetings were being conducted. The States party committee met although I was barred from attending - for good reason, many of the ladies retired to the Red Hat Society meeting. The Foundation raffle and auction was conducted later that evening and, taking the time change into consideration, I got to bed around 1AM.

Sleep did not come very easy as there was also many Wrestling teams in the hotel and they partied in rooms and the hallways all night sometimes very loudly. They subsided around 3 in the morning and sleep came easier. THEN, around 4:30 they started again. Denise and I had an early flight so we had to be up at 5AM anyway so we packed and met our pilot Randy in the lobby and were delivered to the airport in plenty of time to catch our flight home.

Region 6 is always unbeatable for their hospitality, My thanks to all.

Joined up with Joe A and Margaret Souza at the Oakland Airport for an easy flight to Nashville. Picked up our rental car and drove three plus hours to Pigeon Forge. Of Course we had to stop at the Cracker Barrel for dinner. We arrived a bit after 10PM and after dropping our bags in the room proceeded to the Hospitality room for a much needed drink of adult beverage. We socialized with the other early arrivals but soon it was time for bed as we had been awake for most of a 24 hour day.

I spent the morning visiting in the breakfast room while Joe and Margaret set off to see what they could of the Smokey Mountains. Weather was a bit brisk and snow had covered many of the roads but they had a great time visiting the areas that were open. I ventured out for a while in the afternoon and it was nice in the sunshine but in the shade it froze your nose.

That evening we were off to the dinner show. We had a large buffet and it was pretty good at that. the show was very entertaining. The troupe was very talented and sang some familiar country and older rock and roll tunes. They proceeded to get into impersonations of hit entertainers of the 50's, 60's and some of the 70's. Songs our group grew up with and were very familiar. After dinner it was back to the hospitality room and the costume was western!. Some very ingenious costumes and much dancing and singing. I lost two games of screw your neighbor in a row so I called it a night around midnight.

The first of the days meetings was the Tennessee Senate meeting I spoke briefly and presented Tennessee president Reggie Lawrence one of my flag sets for hosting me this weekend. The Region 7 meeting followed where I again had the honor of addressing the Region 7 Senators. This was the first meeting where my successors banner was prominently displayed.

The National Corps of Corps meeting was called next where after some initial tomfoolery I was selected to lead the rest of the meeting. Seems that since the California Tigers were hosting the next meeting that I as Hexable took over this meeting. We made a few bucks on fines, inducted a few folks and adjourned the meeting.

There was an hour or so where I was able to get my feet up for a short rest. Then it was dress for the evenings Banquet. We were welcomed by the Mayor of Pigeon Forge, had a great meal and some short speeches. I was responsible for one of those speeches. The rest of the night was traditional Tennessee hospitality before saying our goodbyes and heading to bed.

Friday was the only trip this year where I could drive rather than catch an airplane. I met past JCI Senate president Joe A in Santa Nella and we headed for Long Beach and the Senate/Jaycees meeting. We checked into the hotel and found that the Hospitality room was not available yet. Joe and I went to the hotel bar for a drink and were joined by Denise and Greg Conrad. As folks arrived and found the same hospitality situation joined us until it was time for dinner. We all gathered in the lobby and dispersed everyone into automobiles for the short drive to the restaurant. There was a large group of Senators at dinner, the food was good and served by some very "sweet" waiters.

Service was slow so by the time we finished dinner it was past time for the Senate Board Meeting. We rushed back to the hotel and gathered in the board room for the Senate meeting. This was the same room that the Tiger Board was to use so there was a bit of an issue. The Senate started late which inconvenienced the Tiger Corps as they would then be starting late as well. After these two meetings I had to find Jaycee Chief of Staff, Debbie Holbrook to get her the Year End Sponsorship Thank you letters for president Claudia's signature.

The hospitality room was now open so I spent a brief time there before retiring for the night.

The day began with the Senate Breakfast meeting presided over by president Karen KT Talamantes. This was the meeting wherein we invite the new Chapter presidents to breakfast to let them meet the Senators and find out what we can do to assist their local chapters. I had the honor of being the keynote speaker and spoke to them about communication and our Return the Favor program.

There was a 10 minute break between the conclusion of the Senate breakfast and the Foundation meeting. The major topic of conversation was the sale/rental of the building and the issues surrounding the right away through the Kentucky Fried parking lot.

The next meeting was conducted in the hospitality room for the Concord2010 convention committee. Each committee chair presented a status of their responsibility and discussion concerning issues were covered. Still much to do.

We had a short time to socialize then it was back to the room to dress for the Jaycee installation and awards dinner. We walked the block to the restaurant where the banquet was to be held OUTDOORS. Many of the ladies were not dressed for such a venue but soon the heaters were fired up and it became comfortable. The meal was good and outgoing president Claudia Sheridan did a great job in mentioning the Senate sponsor for each of her awards. I was honored to Install the new Jaycee president, Paul Farmer and the Jaycee officers for the 2010 year. I might mention that many of the ladies were dressed for a banquet I was the only one in a Tuxedo.

We returned to the hotel and the hospitality room where the theme was the 90's and everyone was appropriately dressed. As has been tradition this year there was a Jeopardy game with 90's era trivia. Much competition between teams.

Joe and I left before breakfast to drive home trying to beat the forecasted rainstorm. We managed to reach Santa Nella with only sprinkles. As Joe and I parted and I headed north the rain hit. This slowed my progress considerable but I arrived home safely.

Next time perhaps I will fly.

Florida Senate President Randy Windham met me at the airport and shuttle me to the hotel. After checking in I joined the group in the hospitality room where there were many faces that I had not seen in quite a while. Past President Allen and Connie Pierce were a nice sight as well as many familiar faces. I met Senator 21024 Jan-Arild Knutsen from Norway who travels extensively and has joined the Florida Senate for this celebration. We had an interesting conversation about all his travels.

I attended president Randy's Board Meeting and gave a short talk on the state of the US JCI Senate. The evening continued with greetings and friendship in the hospitality room.

I had breakfast in the hotel restaurant with some of the Florida Senators. We then moved into the hospitality room and shared experiences until noon when lunch was served.

After lunch, president Randy convened his membership meeting which was informative and efficient. Past US JCI Senate president Bubba Hunt was the "fine Director" and did a humorous job of assessing fines for a variety of acts or events whether true or not. I was given the floor to speak briefly to the members of the Florida Senate.

After the meeting a had a brief time to do some initial packing and a short rest. I donned my formal duds and joined the reception in the hospitality room. It was Valentines weekend and most of the ladies and some of the men wore RED to celebrate. There was a fine display of Lasses in the room, I might add.

We then moved into the Banquet room where I had the pleasure of sitting between Arwyn Pritchett, 86th president of the Florida Jaycees and Randy Avon #8283, first president of the Florida Senate. I had a pleasant conversation with Arwyn on the status of the Florida Senate and found Randy quite fascinating.

President Randy called the meeting to order with a welcome, invocation and Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag. There was a lengthy but efficient memorial service to remember those friend that we have lost. Introductions and dinner followed.

Florida Jaycees president Arwyn spoke to the group about the status of the Florida Jaycees and how the Senate has been of assistance to their chapters. I followed Arwyn and spoke about the US JCI Senate and in particular our Return the Favor Program and my vision of the Senate and Jaycees crossing the bridge to the future Together.

Randy Avon, Charter president of the Florida JCI Senate did a great job as Keynote speaker. His delivery was humorous although filled with great memories as well as some serious issues on areas to improve the impact of the Junior Chamber. He also spoke on how the Senate should take more of a lead on serious issues.

Randy was presented with the Homer Shepherd Memorial Award. This was followed by the special presentation of a JCI Senatorship. This was a presentation and honor that was long overdue. She has remained active after aging out of the Jaycees and always assists the Senate in setting up the Senate Hospitality room. Many Senators, in fact, assume that she has always been a Senator as she is always helping where she can.

The 40th Anniversary Banquet and celebration concluded with the Jaycee Creed led by newest Senator.

Everyone retired to the hospitality room which became very crowded but joyful conversations abounded throughout the room. I said my goodbyes and headed to bed around midnight.

I arose at 5 AM to catch the shuttle to the airport. I arrived and made it to the gate with about an hour to spare so I found a Starbucks and got my morning caffeine before boarding my flight home.

I had a small challenge when leaving my home for the airport. My BART ticket was rejected when I attempted to enter the train station - it seems that it had become demagnetized. The agent was kind enough to give me two passes which closely matched what the amount of the ticket. I arrived at the airport in time to have a cup of coffee before boarding. It was an easy flight although we were fighting a headwind all the way and arrived in Honolulu about an hour late.

Ben Makaea had checked the arrival time so he arrived to pick me up just as the plane touched down. We shuttled over to Ono's Hawaiian Food where we met up with Wayne Ishihara and I had my yearly fix of Lau Lau and Poi. Ben then delivered me to the Pagoda Hotel and I checked in. We then joined a small group of Hawaiian Senators/Oldtimers in the hospitality room where Mike Fujioka and Big Al Lewis greeted everyone. Soon Katherine arrived and had Fats and Unda in tow after picking them up at the airport.

It was soon time to go to the Karaoke room which is becoming an annual event for the early arrivals. The Hawaii Senators have some pretty impressive voices and many a song was belted out during the evening. I gave everyone a break and DID NOT sing. There was plenty of food and drink but after being up for over 20 hours I beamed out early for some much needed sleep.

First item of business was to iron my shirts before cleaning up and taking a walk along the beach. I stopped in at Ala Moana Center for some gift shopping then returned to spend some time with my Hawaiian friends in the hospitality room until time to dress for the Oldtimers Recognition Banquet.

The room was filled with a good showing of Hawaii Jaycees as well as the Oldtimers/Senators to honor Ray Graulty. Ray is a past Jaycee and Judge on Oahu. He gave a great presentation on his Jaycee career and it's effect on his participation in politics. I had the honor and privilege to participate in a very special Senatorship presentation. Henry Chang is one of the "forgotten" Jaycees. He was actually nominated in the late 1970's but the chapter never funded the application and after a few years and changing leadership in the chapter the nomination was forgotten. Ed Hasagawa led the effort to rectify that error. A very special honor for a deserving Jaycee.

Mainland Senators attending in addition to myself were, Region X VP Caroline Smith, California Senators Dave and Katina Repp and transplanted California Senator Mark Gardner.

After dinner we returned to the Pagoda Hospitality room for more outstanding Hawaiian hospitality.

I again took a walk in fantastic weather along the beach and around that area before returning to the hospitality room for some talk story until time to leave for the Chinese New Year Celebration and parade. We parked close to Chinatown and walked to the celebration area where the streets were closed and vendors lined each side. We bought a plate lunch from the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees. We wandered around scoping out the wares of the street vendors as well as the permanent businesses in the area. We selected a great spot next to the stage to watch the new years parade.

We returned to the hospitality room where more folks were gathering to go to the Mongoose Corps dinner.

The usual Chinese buffet was closed this time so we went to a Korean style BBQ restaurant were you select your meats and vegetables (uncooked) from a large buffet. Each table has a propane grill built into the center of the table and you cook your foods to your liking. There were 6 people to a table and we shared the cooking. Mongoose commander Mark Nakashima went through his agenda and was re-elected for another year. I might mention that he is also a Hawaii District congressman in the House of Representatives of Hawaii.

After dinner we again returned to the hospitality room for more talk story as we continued to renew friendships and meet a few new friends. I said my goodbyes to all my friends and off to bed.

I packed and checked out of my room and went over to the hospitality room to wait for my pilot, Ben, to arrive. We went to breakfast at the Like Like Restaurant and then to the Airport where I had an easy flight home. As always it is difficult to leave paradise but be assured I will be back next year.

We had breakfast with Marietta and Julie before setting out for the Airport. We started out with plenty of time to make our flights but between traffic tie ups and locating a gas station I became a bit anxious about making our flights. Our pilot, Denise, pulled it off and we arrived at the gate just as the plane was boarding. I bid Wendy, my traveling companion for the past 17 days adieu and set out with my new companion, Denise, for Raleigh, South Carolina.

CJ Jordan met us upon our arrival in Raleigh and delivered us to her home before returning to work. We did some much needed laundry and lazed around for a couple of hours until she returned after work. When she left CJ indicated that her printer did not work so I spent some time and repaired the little bugger. We were then off to Sweet Tomatoes for dinner before getting to the hotel and settling in for the rest of the week.

Denise and I made quite a pair as Denise woke with a cold of her own. We slept for 10 hours then had some coffee while contemplating what we would do for the day.

We took a walk around town and visited the Museum, where we took some photos of the Barbie collection for Wendy. We visited an art gallery and as it was getting late stopped for dinner at Clyde Coopers BBQ, a local funky restaurant that looked as if it came out of the 50's and probably did. The food was very good and we savored every bite.

We had noticed in our walk-around yesterday a sign about a walking tour hosted by the historic society so we arrived at the appointed time. The tour took about an hour and covered many of the historic buildings along the main street of town. We were then off to the Capital Building and the old Congressional chambers which contained much of the history of Raleigh. Next we visited the Museum of Natural History before returning to the hotel to dress for dinner.

CJ picked us up at the Hotel and we joined many North Carolina Senators for dinner. What an honor it was to share dinner with the North Carolina Senators, many of whom drove up to 2 hours to join us; President Kim Bode and Terry, Tracy and Ray Culler, CJ Jordan, Regional VP Jimmy Maness, Past US Senate President Daryl Watts, Johnny Swank and Brenda Coleman, NC JC VP Stacy Hanlin, Past NC Jaycee president Shannon Worthington. Thank you all.

Denise and I took a short walk downtown then hung around the hotel until folks started to arrive. There was a bit of confusion about the hospitality room which, at first looked like it would be in a regular room with the bed removed and would be a bit tight. This was quickly resolved and we moved downstairs to a spacious meeting room which made everyone much more comfortable. We dressed for dinner and all lined up by rank for the parade of introductions. It was an interesting buffet with salads and Pizza on the tables but the vegetables, mashed potatoes and meat station were in a buffet line. The food was good although it was very good for my dies as there were only 6 inch plates available.

After dinner we gathered for the First Time Jaycee program which is run by the Senate. Then it was off to the Cardinal Corps meeting. It was a different kind of meeting than the California Tigers and lasted until 2:30AM so bed was very welcome.

This was a busy day beginning with the NC Senate meeting which was well run by president Kim Bode. They had lots of activities reported. Each Regional Director is a liaison to each of the Jaycee chapters in their Region and coordinates Senate assistance to each.

Lunch was served in the hospitality room although I needed to change for my next mission. I had the opportunity and honor to address the Jaycees at their Board meeting which was somewhat of a challenge as I still had my cold. I took some decongestant to try and still a nagging cough so it seems I traded the cough for a dry mouth. I hope I got my message across about our Return The Favor program. Then back to my room to get out of my suit and rest for a bit before dressing for dinner.

This time it was into my Tuxedo for the Jaycees A&I Banquet. I was again honored to be part of the New Senatorship presentations where we welcomed six new Senators into the North Carolina Senate and the US JCI Senate. The next presentation was a special honor for me and it was a total surprise as we welcomed Ambassador Jimmy Manuss. President Kim was extremely gracious in having me join her to present the Senate sponsored Year End Awards to the outstanding Jaycees. Thanks, Kim, for the opportunity.

Back to the room to change into more suitable clothing for the evenings gathering in the hospitality room.

Since there was a severe Ice storm on Saturday we checked to confirm the status of our flight home. The storm had passed and the airport was again open for business and our flight would be on time. We joined the Senate once again in the hospitality room where they served the traditional First Timers breakfast to honor those that were presented their Senatorships last evening. Kim then drove us to the airport. It had been a wonderful but busy three plus weeks but I am looking forward to getting home for a few days.

I awoke early and went to use the computer in the business center. WOW! 25 cents per minute and after 13 days away it would cost a small fortune to check all the emails I would have. I ended up spending $5 to get my most important messages. We went shopping for the First Ladies reception refreshments and moved into my suite. Spent the rest of the evening socializing with the early arrivals.

I had an easy morning with the California Delegation discussing the Concord2010 convention and how the promotion would be conducted. I also met with some of the appointed Program Managers and Committee members on an informal basis. I then attended each of the committee meetings prior to the Executive Committee meeting. We ended the evening with conversations in the hospitality room.

The business meeting went very well and with all the guest comments still went overtime by only 15 minutes but still kept the overall meeting short. We were visited by the new British Chairman Marietta Coleman and her traveling companion Julie; Arja Vilanko, President of the European Senate; Rene Jacob VP of the Canadian Senate; John Moreno, President of ASAC; and Ray Brathwaite, Director to the English Speaking Americas from ASAC.

I took some time for a power nap before hosting a reception for our international guests and the elected officers of the US Senate just prior to the evening dinner. We had just a short Foundation Awards program, Raffle drawing for the Presidential Raffle committee and a special Senatorship presentation for Collette Welsh #69240. I was proud to be the president to make the presentation to her as we have been friends for a long time. The evening ended with Hospitality, dancing, a wheelchair race and the Foundation Raffle and silent auction. Wendy won the grand prize which was a week in a condo at Daytona Beach. Everyone said all their goodbyes before returning to their homes the next morning.

Today is free and we were off to meet Ken and Sharon Miller at Epcot Park. We had a wonderful time although a cold that had been slowly brewing finally caught up with me. As the day progressed I went from a party animal to a slow sloth. We hit most of the rides and strolled through many countries before finding a good spot to watch the fireworks which signaled the close of the park. Wendy's foot was really bothering her so she chose to rent a wheelchair for the day. My did I envy her about half way through the day.

Our plan was to visit Cape Kennedy But I decided that it would not help me to kick this bug and I would not be good company today. I remained at the hotel and primarily rested, checked emails and did my best to get over my cold as I had more sights to see. Wendy and Denise took Maretta and Julie with the while I played Hermit.

Located and checked into the Euston Hotel. The website indicated that it was somewhat small but that was an understatement. It was quite compact although it will work for what we need as I expect to be out and about most of the time. It had a double bed with only a small aisle o each side, a small TV on the wall and a small hutch for a closet.

We took what was to be a short walk but ended in Trafalgar Square where we spent quite a bit of time in the National Gallery. I had to visit the lou and thought I took mental notes to return to where Wendy was studding the paintings. Well that did not work so well, the Gallery is made up of many rooms and all look similar. I was lost for a while but managed to find my way back to hook up with Wendy. Our stomachs were complaining so we found a small pub that had great Fish and Chips and a Pint of Beer. We then walked back to the hotel for the evening. We managed to put on much more than our recommended 1,000 steps this day. Went to bed bushed!

Since we went to bed early we woke at 5:30 in the morning. We had some coffee and a bit of TV to see what the weather held for us this day. Coffee in the London Hotels is instant and not brewed as we are accustomed to in the US. Tea is proper Bags and I found myself drinking a bit more tea than usual.

Today we tackled the "TUBE" and successfully navigated our way to the Tower of London. We ended up spending virtually all day there. We purchased the audio equipment which did an excellent job of explaining the history of each segment of the Tower. We also joined a guided tour by one of the Beefeaters. The Crown Jewels were all on display and were they magnificent. Our 1,000 steps today were mostly straight up and down more than 1,000 stone stairs. We again caught the TUBE back to Trafalgar Square to check out some of the shops that were closed last evening. We had dinner in Piccadilly Square then back on the tube to the hotel and some much needed rest.

Last day in London and good news! Upon checking out of the hotel I received a message that the Milton Keynes hotel had found my walking stick. I called Chris and he will have his daughter pick it up and bring it with him to Concord in June. We left our luggage at the hotel's storage room and set out for our last day in London. We wanted to get an overview of the rest of the city of London as well as having to walk as much so we went to the bus terminal for a tour bus.

We were surprised by just how much of the city we covered by foot yesterday although there were a few new sights for us to experience. This was an on and off bus so we disembarked at Buckingham Palace, took some photos but were unable to take a tour as they are not available in the Wintertime. We decided to walk back to Big Ben and Parliament building and Westminster Abby. We re boarded the bus and got off at the London Hard Rock, where they all began, for lunch.

It was getting a bit late so we headed back to the bus stop to catch the bus back to our starting point. We took a quick albeit long walk back to the hotel to retrieve our luggage. For an unexpectedly easy day of minimal walking we were quite tired and still managed over 1,000 steps again.

We left the hotel an caught our train to Manchester where we caught a cab to our hotel for the night. We went down to the coffee shop and each had a small pot of tea before bed. I shall not complain about the cost of coffee or tea in the US again - 8 pounds 20 pennies or about $13 US dollars FOR TEA!!!

We were up at 5:30, packed and had an excellent breakfast, which was included in the cost of the room, then caught a cab to the airport for our flight back to the US and the BOD in Kissimmee. There was only a small queue for ticketing and security went smoothly so we arrived at the gate with time to spare.

There were a couple of groups of Brits on the plane obviously heading to Mickeys world and they were up and down constantly talking to each other while the kids were having foot races down the aisles - quite distracting when all I wanted to do is snooze. There were plenty of movies and I took short naps here and there so the 8 hour flight went by quickly. Immigration and customs went well so Wendy and I had about 45 minutes before Denise arrived. We picked up our rental car and made it to the hotel without incident.

We met a few early arrivals including Sandy McManus who joined us for a quick dinner then it was time for bed having been up for 21 hours.

After settling into our new digs at the Jurys Inn Hotel we then set out for the lobby where we met all the attendees that had either just arrived or had been here for a day or two. We had a short walk to the Loch Fyne restaurant for a Fish and Chips dinner, Genuine British Style and very good. After dinner we had a short time to socialize before we began a marathon walk to the Milton Keynes theatre. We made our requisite 10,000 steps in one fell swoop.

At the theatre we were treated to a traditional British Pantomime of the story of Cinderella. We had excellent seats and jolly good fun. A humorous play by some very talented young performers assisted by an "Old Trooper" 89 year old Mickey Rooney. The two ugly stepsisters were played by men and they did a terrific job and were VERY Ugly. During intermission we were whisked off to a champagne reception by our British Hosts. Then back to the second part of the play. A bit of fun was had after the play as the troop involved the audience in some comedy. The British do not have a hospitality room as we think of it in the US so after trodding back to the hotel (adding to our step count) we all converged on the hotel bar and made many new acquaintances. What a wonderful evening.

We had an early wake up to get ready for the days events. After breakfast in the hotel everyone again met in the hotel lobby. This time a bus was waiting for us which whisked us off to the ancient "gleaming spires" of Oxford one of the best of British Education centers. The city itself was founded in the 9th century and the university in 1167. Many of the colleges are nearly as old. We had professional guides during our 2 1/2 hour walk through Oxfords historic sights and colleges. we spent some time at Trinity College going through the halls and classrooms. This is only one of more than thirty individual colleges that make up Oxford University (I didn't know that!) We had a coffee stop break before proceeding to the river cruiser at Folly Bridge. The entire group crowded into the river cruiser's main cabin as it was much too cold to be out on the open deck area so it was a wee bit tight. Even so we all had a delightful hot lunch and much camaraderie for the cruise. I'm not sure how many folks actually saw the countryside that we were passing. I did step out for a short gaze but quickly retreated back to the warmth of the cabin. There was the requisite short speeches and presentations of gifts to the outgoing chairman Chris Read. This was one of the coldest and snowiest Januaries in recent memory and we only got so far on our planned journey as the Thames was frozen over and we had to turn back.

We disembarked to our waiting buses and during the ride back to the hotel were presented with 20 questions of historical facts that we heard during our tour. Thanks to Gavin and Jeanne McCloud the prize went to Wendy and me. A mouse pad with images of the coats of arms of English nobility. Upon arrival back at the hotel we had an hour to freshen up and get ready for Chris's 60's themed reception and dinner

Chairman Chris had a champagne reception for all the "Bloody Foreigners" prior to Friday Night's 60's themed dinner. We had a group photo of the US Delegation with Chris decked out in his 60's Auston Powers garb. We then moved to the Banque Lounge for the pre-Banquet reception where we indulged in Tequila Sunrises. There were many variations of 60's attire and everyone was having a great time.. Wendy and I were able to snag a table with some of the Brits while other US attendees joined with various international folks. Dinner was quite good starting with Chicken Liver Pate and Vegetable Terrine. The main course consisted of Roast Sirloin with Yorkshire pudding and a selection of vegetables and potatoes all this was washed down with vast quantities of wine.

Chris was presented with a cake for his 60th Birthday along with some wonderful thoughts from his daughter, Elisha. The evening continued with a Beatles Tribute Band complete with a song book so everyone would know the words. The band was very good although VERY LOUD. Wendy and I took a few turns around the dance floor before the bands first break and she did very well on her sprained foot.

During this intermission the Brits put on a great Cabaret Show. Picture a bunch of "seasoned" blokes dressed as women engaging in a beauty contest! The winner would be the "Top Toddy" and Chris's partner for the first dance when the band returned. Quite fun, actually. Peter Browning (Got the picture?) worked the room harassing many of the folks including me, of course. Quite a sight! We stayed for a while as the band was fun but eventually my hearing became dull and we retreated to the lounge where we could have some quiet conversation. Many folks had the same idea as there was plenty of fellowship in the lounge.

I had an opportunity to have a conversation with the incoming British Senate Chairman, Marietta Coleman and was introduced to her son and his lady friend. Time caught up and we trotted off to bed around 1:30 in the morning. Just as we were failing asleep there was a racket in the halls and rooms around us which lasted about an hour before quiet was restored and sleep came upon us.

After a hearty breakfast everyone boarded a "Double Decker" bus for our trip to Bletchley Park ("station X"). This was the heart of the British Codebreaking team during WW2. The work they carried out cracking the "unbreakable" German ENIGMA codes helped turn the tide of the war in the Allies favor. We saw replicas of the Bombe code-breaking machine and COLOSSUS, the worlds first semi-programmable computer. The Mansion which was the center of operations and many of the huts used during the war still remain and are open as part of the museum. Other exhibits is a post office, a maritime display, a collection of vintage vehicles and one hut "from Bletchley With Love" exhibit of amazing stories of WW2 Spies and Double Agents, including the war time exploits of Ian Fleming.

We had lunch at the Park and I was honored to be seated with the Lord Mayor of Milton Keynes whom I found fascinating.

We were treated to Vegetable Lasagna, Salmon in coconut sauce and Havana Lamb in a Caribbean sauce, desert consisted of Apple Pie, a European Cheeseboard and seasonal fruit. It goes without saying that there was also more wine.. We had some time for a further look-around before being bussed back to the hotel.

There was some relaxation time before gathering for the traditional Chairman's drinks and champagne reception. I'm convinced that the British Senate keeps at least one Champagne cellar in business. I was also amazed at the amount of Champagne that I could consume in a single day.

We were called through to the Drumming Out Banquet where we were privileged to sit at Chairman Chris's table and I next to his lovely daughter, Elisha. I was given the honor of leading the group in the Jaycee Creed and managed to embarrass myself by misstating a line in the creed and,of course, became brain dead for a few seconds before recovering my failing memory. We had another fantastic meal and many bottles of wine.

Chris delivered his final comments and then the Past Chairmen put on another bit of Cabaret. The two MC's took the part of the appraisers in the "Antique Road Show' TV Series. Each Past Chairman's spouse brought them up to be "appraised" for their Antique Value. The MC's did a great job and sounded as if they were actually appraisers. After each Past Chairman was appraised they took their place on the stage (actually a riser). It was interesting at the high (or low) valuation placed on some of the "exhibits). When all was done Chris and Marietts took their seats on the stage and the CHAIN was formally transferred from Chris to Marietta which ended the formal ceremonies. A disco dance and DJ played for the rest of the evening while the wine continued to be served.

Get away day started with the traditional Champagne Breakfast/Brunch as the first formal event to welcome the 2010 Senate Chairman Marretta and to say farewell to all our old and new friends from all over before heading to all points. Wendy and I took a cab to the train station for our trip to London. We arrived at Euston Station where I remembered that I left my walking stick in the Milton Keynes hotel, Damn!! Called the hotel but was transferred to Housekeeping where all I got was the recording. I left a message but had little hope of retrieving my stick.

Since I had a later flight and more luggage than usual, I was able to coax my sister, Linda, into driving me to the airport. I met up with Wendy in Denver where we caught our flight to Orlando. Ken and Sharon Miller met us and transported us to the La Quinta for our overnight stay and subsequent flight to the United Kingdom. We enjoyed a late dinner and some long overdue visiting with Ken and Sharon at a nearby sports bar then we left two pieces of luggage until our return for the Kissimmee BOD.

We were able to sleep in late on Sunday before catching the hotel shuttle to the airport. Luckily we had plenty of time as there was a long line to check in for our flight. We had lunch at an Italian restaurant before tackling the security line although as it turned out the line moved quickly.

We had a quick (7 hours) and easy flight into Manchester airport on Virgin Atlantic airlines although the seats were a bit cramped in the cheap section. We watched a few movies and slept as best we could. We arrived a bit early, both schedule wise as well as time wise - 8 in the morning. Mike Ashton was there waiting for us. He had been up for hours checking on our flight status and driving to the airport which was a couple of hours in the snow. We had a joyful ride to our new home for a few days "Glebe Cottage"

What a charming home the Ashton's have. The home is actually two cottages that have been connected by an addition between them. One of the cottages was built in 1700 while the other was built in 1725. You can imaging the settling that must have occurred and it showed as most of the floors were not particularly level throughout the home. Some of the ceilings were lower than in modern homes so you needed to watch your head through some of the doorways but all this just added to the warmth and charm of the home and we both felt very welcome and at home.

We had a spot of tea with Claire before she was off to the airport to pick up their other house guests from Germany. Wendy went upstairs for a nap while I shared a beer and conversation with Mike before I could tell that it was time for me to examine the inside of my eyelids. I managed about 2 hours of sleep. When I returned downstairs Elsbeth and Eugen Rommel had arrived and we became acquainted. Elsbeth is the Chairman (president) of the German Senate.

Claire then took Elsbeth, Eugen and I for a walk around Clifton village culminating at the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin, first built in the 10th century and used extensively since that time.

Back at the cottage we enjoyed a glass of Champagne and conversation around the fireplace in the "Lounge", their living room and entertainment center. The next event was dinner and everyone joined in to chop, stir, mix, and set the table. What a grand dinner it was; roast duck breast, fig/apple compote, steamed Brussels sprouts, carrots and leeks' potatoes and of course a glass or two, or three of wine. This was highlighted by pleasant conversation for the rest of the evening. We then retired to the lounge for some excellent brandy before trodding off to bed.

I slept very well until a bit after 8am when I washed up and went downstairs to see who else had awoke. Claire was the only one up and she set up her computer so I could check my e-mails. Then the house came alive with everyone looking for a spot of tea or coffee. We all shared breakfast then got ready for the days adventure. Mike had arranged for a van and driver and we set out for Birmingham and Mike's metal plating factory. The factory was amazing with so much going on in a small building. The variety of products that his staff processes on a daily basis was very interesting. Chrome, Brass were two of the metals that they plate on a variety of products as well as anodizing if everything from rivets to fishing pole ferrules, hinges, screws and even dart shafts are process in his factory.

Our next stop was at "The Bull" which, as Mike says, is a "proper Pub". It is a grand old English Pub claimed by some to be started in 1729 as a beer retailer and gun maker. We engaged in sampling a few genuine English beers and a variety of dishes, some potato and sausage stews, casseroles and other old English dishes. After lunch we drove down GAS Street which is the first street in England to be lited by gas lights. We then stopped by "The Hole in the Wall" which is actually a small passage in a wall which leads to a bridge overlooking the canals and the walkways pubs and cafes lining this area of the canals. Not much activity in this snow and cold but I could see where it would be a bustling area during the summer months.

That evening we went to The Coopers Arms for dinner. Alas, we got lost (twice) and arrived a bit late ( after stopping for directions) but our reserved table was waiting patiently. This is a 17th century mansion which now houses the pub and a claim to fame is their "Carvery" basically a buffet wherein they "Carve" the meats to your order. We all enjoyed a meal, wine and conversation.

I awoke early and went downstairs where Mike and Claire were up. We enjoyed a spot of tea and conversation before the others came downstairs. Mike had left the lights on in his car and his neighbor, Dave, came over to jump start the vehicle. The jump would not work so we removed the battery and would drop it off at his mechanic's to charge until we returned in the evening.

We set out for adventure for the day driving around the city of Nottingham. One of our stops was Wallaton Hall, the original home of the Willoby family and currently a museum and public social hall. There is a large heard of Red Deer on the property all decked out in their fine Antlers. We exited the van only briefly to take photos as the ground was very icy and slippery not to mention very cold.

We then set out to Sherwood Forest. There was quite a bit of snow but we walked around the major part of the forest surrounding the visitor center where the mighty Oak trees dominate and are quite impressive. Not like the American Oaks these trees are mostly thick trunks with short limbs. We visited the "Major Oak" a mighty tree where legend has it Robin Hood lived. We made a contribution to the local economy at the Visitor Center then back to the van and lunch in Southwell. We then visited Southwell Minster Cathedral. A massive structure with multiple areas for services. A highlight was the Chapter House, a circular room from the 13th century which is famous for the exquisite carvings of leaves with carved heads of animals and green men. in the center was the Stations of the cross. The sculpture consists of twelve stations each depicting a scene from the moment that Christ was taken before the Tribunal where he was condemned to be crucified until the actual crucifiction.

Back to Nottingham and Ye Olde trip to Jerus Alen Pub. History dates back 800 years and is carved into the sandstone caves under Nottingham Castle. Rumor has it that the Pub is haunted although we failed to see any ghosts.

Upon our return to Glebe Cottage we all needed a warm spot O tea before all pitching in to prepare dinner. While dinner was on slow cook I and Eugen accompanied Mike out to the "Barn" to set up for the evenings entertainment. Originally this structure, separated from the house, was a small barn that had fell into disrepair. Mike had it completely refurbished and remodeled and now is a wonderful entertainment spot and office. Mike had also purchased a baby grand piano which fits well in one portion of the barn. Graham and Jill Barker, neighbors of the Ashton's and musicians in their own right arrived around 7pm. While we all enjoyed a glass or two of champagne they entertained us with a magnificent piano and violin recital. What a treat!

After the recital we returned to the cottage and enjoyed a wonderful Rack of Lamb meal. We then retired to the Lounge for brandy, chocolates and conversation until around midnight when we all retired for the night.

The first order of business was to replace the battery in Mikes car while he was cooking "A real Senate breakfast". And what a breakfast it was; Fillet steak, Lambs Liver,Bacon, Lambs Kidney,Two kinds of sausage, with eggs, bread, sauteed mushrooms and braised tomatoes. Really great but not something I could eat on a frequent basis.

We packed the cars and headed South to Milton Keynes for the drumming out program. What wonderful hosts the Ashtons are, they really enjoy having house guests and spare nothing to make everyone feel comfortable. It is not tidy and neat but more like staying in your own familys home as it is very comfortable and easy to feel completely comfortable and at home. There is no words to express our thanks for a wonderful time. I hope that I can Return their hospitality sometime in the future.

Jim Hampshire picked me up at the Phoenix Airport in his space shuttle and delivered me safely to the hotel. The hospitality room was open by the time I checked in and unpacked for the weekend. It was great to see so many of my Friends as they began to arrive and gather for dinner at the San Diego Mexican Restaurant. Not what you usually expect of a Mexican Restaurant as the menu had primarily seafood dishes but all were excellent. There were over a dozen Senators and guests there for dinner around a large table where we could easily enjoy each others company.

We returned to the hotel where we were joined by some late comers in the hospitality room. Jim left to pick up First Lady Wendy Bell at the Airport and she joined the party. Surprise! A game of Screw Your Neighbor beamed in and the dollar bills magically appeared in front of each player. The first person to get screwed was yours truly but I had to remind everyone that they should be kind to the "President"! Well, Lady Luck did smile upon me because the players were trying very hard NOT to be nice to the president and I won the next two games before we called it a night.

We all had breakfast at the hotel and were planning to go out to a local botanical gardens a bit later. We gathered in the hospitality room and many more folks began to arrive including Pat and Santa Bob Holbert with gifts to present.Mine was a very cute White Tiger pussy that was quickly confiscated by Arizona president Cindy Naylor. By this time it was a bit late to get out to the garden so we stayed in the Hospitality room and shared memories and stories (imagine that).

Soon it was time to load up and beam over to the Phoenix Opry for dinner and a show. What a grand time we had as we were joined by many more Arizona Senators. Past US JCI Senate President Jim Ashley joined us as well and we had some time to reminisce (I was his Chief of Staff some years ago). I was presented with a beautiful Kachina Doll which will have a prominent place in my home.
This is a family business and the wait staff were all seating folks and waiting tables before giving a great musical performance. During dinner I did notice that there were a great number of musical instruments all around the stage. I did not count but it looked close to a hundred - well, maybe nit quite that many but a gaggle of em. The entertainers were mostly an extended family group although there were some that were clearly not some form of relative. As the show progressed every one of the instruments were used by the musicians, even a pair of Alpine Horns during one of the musical tunes. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Many of us made it back to the Hospitality room and a few more games of Screw Your Neighbor. I again had to remind them not to piss off the president and it seemed to work this time as I won the last game, albeit by the skin of my teeth. It was then time to say a few goodbyes and off to bed for the night.

Wendy and I had coffee with the few remaining folks then met up with past first lady Debbie Steele and headed out for breakfast and a visit. She then dropped us off at the Airport for our SHORT flight home - almost as fast as it Scotty had beamed us home.

As always president Cindy and the entire Arizona Senate were wonderful and put on one hell of a party. Thanks you for a great time.

Another easy flight for Denise and I. We were joined on this trip by Joa A. and Margaret Souza. Arkansas Senate president Ray Gilbert and Senator Jay Robinson picked us up at the airport. The other Ray, Ray Hackworth, had our rooms arranged for us as we arrived, so we unpacked and settled into the room before joining the other early arrivals in the hospitality room.

Dinner was served in a lobby level meeting room with pulled pork sandwiches and all the trimmings. We then all moved up to the 6th floor where the hospitality bar was located (also the hospitality room for the rest of the weekend.) Folks were arriving from all over the country as the evening progressed. Administrative VP Mike and Secretary Steve were in attendance as well as Region 8 VP, Peggy Rider, Past president Jumper and Hilda Davis, Raffle Ticket Chair, Mike Sawyer and Region 7 VP Glenda Wisdom. It was delightful to see past US Senate president Lanny and Karen Heater who also joined us for the weekend.

A round Robin of Senators sharing their stories of their most memorable Jaycee moments was interrupted by a rush of newly arriving Senators, wives and significant others. The evening was filled with folks greeting the new arrivals and sharing friendships. The 6th floor rooms were all assigned to our group so the party was able to last well into Saturday morning without bothering any other hotel guests.

We were up and had time to get our shirts ironed before breakfast in the hotel dining room. President Ray Gilbert called the Arkansas Senate meeting to order at 10Am, followed at 11 Am by the Region 7 meeting conducted by VP Glenda Wisdom. I had the pleasure of presenting a flag set to both Ray's for their efforts in hosting the meeting.

President Ray Gilbert then escorted me downtown to the Arkansas Jaycee meeting where I had the opportunity to address the membership about our Return The Favor program and the importance of "You Gotta Ask" recruiting process. Ray then dropped me off at the Bill Clinton Presidential Library where I met up with Joe A., Margaret and Denise as well as most of the other Senators that were already at the Library. We toured the Library then we were off to the gift shop for gifts and souvenirs for the folks back home. We called the hotel to request the shuttle to pick us up and our luck was good as he was in the area already and picked us up within 5 minutes. We had the opportunity for some photos as we arrived, a bit of hospitality then it was time to get ready for the boat cruise and dinner.

We motored to the boat dock and since it was a wee bit cool outside we were invited to wait in the gift shop area while waiting to board. We did board at the scheduled time after having the required souvenir photos taken by the staff. We had a private dining area (inside) on the 2nd deck and were joined by the Arkansas Jaycee membership. We all had a great time together as a single organization and interacted well. They had a nice buffet set up followed by music and dancing. There was not much opportunity to view the shoreline as it became very cold out on the deck. I ventured out a few times but did not tarry as the cold got to me quickly.

Just before docking I was introduced to a young man who had been on the boat and was asked to become a Jaycee. I answered some of his questions that he had for me concerning what I felt I received from being a Jaycee in my younger years. His information was gathered by the recruiter and he seemed very interested. I hope I made a small impact by encouraging him to join.

After docking we were shuttled back to the hotel and into our comfy clothes for the evenings hospitality. It was lucky that we had the entire 6th floor as the numbers were such that it was near impossible for us all to fit into the room and the hallway served well as the overflow lounge.

Up and packed and off to the hospitality room for coffee and some conversation with the remaining folks. Denise and I had a late flight so we took the shuttle downtown to the River Market area to catch the trolly for a city tour. We arrived downtown before the trolly began operating so we took a "cool" stroll along the street. Most of the shops were closed until the afternoon but a cafe was open so we stopped in for a spot-o-tea. That put us close to Trolly time and we boarded for a short ride around Little Rock as well as North Little Rock. I did not know that there were two townships together. The Trolly was nice and warm and the trip was quite interesting. We got off a stop before our boarding station and stopped into a small restaurant for lunch. The hotel shuttle picked us up and we returned to the Hotel in time to pick up our luggage and depart to the Airport for our flight home.

Denise and I had an easy flight from San Francisco to Richmond. Past President Frank Butler picked us up at the airport. It was raining very hard and the restaurant that Frank wished to take us to was in an area that was prone to flooding so we opted to have dinner at the hotel. We had a nice dinner, a few cocktails and some friendly conversation until it was time to retire for the night.

We joined Frank for breakfast then met up with Dan and Elizabeth Benka at 11 AM for a tour of the city of Richmond, a very entertaining ride I might say.

It was still very overcast so we were not able to see the view of the skyline that was usually visible from the approach to the city that Dan had selected. As we got closer we could see portions of the city and it is quite spectacular. We drove through some of the area before our first stop at St. Johns Church, a living memorial to American liberty and the location of Patrick Henry's famous speech and his plea "Give me liberty or give me death".

Richmond is the former capital of the Confederacy and is often referred to as the city of monuments. This is most displayed along Monument Avenue, a National Historic Landmark where statues, monuments and historic mansions line the street. There are monuments to General Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stewart as well as Arthur Ash, the tennis legend.

Our tour continued through the Jackson Ward area, once known as the "Harlem of the South", The Wilton Plantation House, then through the downtown area. Our last stop was a quick drive through the Hollywood Cemetery, named for the Holly Trees and not the California "tinsel town". Interred here are two U.S. Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and thousands of Confederate soldiers. Perhaps the most memorable part of the tour was getting LOST in the Cemetery. This is quite a large portion of land with roads leading everywhere, or in our case NOWHERE. As we drove through we began to notice that there were some familiar sights where we had just been. Up, down and around we drove until finally we found a car that seemed to be heading out and perhaps the driver knew where he was. EUREKA! We found the exit. I was starting to hum the Kingston Trio song "The man who never returned".

We escaped from the Cemetery just in time to make our lunch reservations at the Tobacco House restaurant, a restored tobacco warehouse from the 1860's. One of the options for lunch was "She Crab Soup" something I had never tried. It sounded good to everyone so it was She Crab Soup all around. WOW! what a treat, something I will remember and look for in future trips.

After lunch we drove past the White House of the Confederacy on our way back to the hotel and the beginning of the whirlwind of weekend activities.

The hospitality room was open although supplies were continually arriving, being unpacked and set up for the arriving Senators. The magic hour of 6:30PM began the exodus to the Longhorn Steak House for dinner. There were so many early arrivals that we needed two seatings to accommodate everyone but the food was well worth the wait.

We returned to the hotel just in time for Frank Butler to escort me to the Virginia Gentleman Corps Commander Call to meet the current and past commanders. I then had to rush back to the hospitality room where I was requested to speak to the Virginia Jaycees First Timers. I was able to spend a short time with the first timers before it was time for the Virginia Gentlemen Corps meeting. After the Corps meeting Ariel took Denise and me over to the Jaycees room to see all the memorabilia displays. There were some awesome photos, newsletters, pins and other items dating back to the 40's and 50's. Back to the hospitality room and a well deserved drink before our next task. Denise and I were the judges for the best holiday drink contest. Luckily there were only two drinks entered so we had a fighting chance to remain fairly sober. The winner was a chocolate/peppermint drink concocted by Art Eisenberg. The clock was reaching the witching hour so it was off to bed.

There was some time after breakfast to prepare for another busy but exciting day. Everyone began to assemble in the ballroom foyer at 10:30 to meet and greet before the Virginia Senate 40th Anniversary Luncheon. There was a good crowd of Senators from Maryland attending in support of the Virginia Senate including Presidential Advisor and Past President Calvin and Dianne Baerveldt, Chaplain Larry and Ronnie Bohn and from Florida Doug and Kay White. Of course Secretary Steve and Dawn Southerland were also on hand to celebrate with the Virginia Senate.

The venue was well organized by Anne Johnson with some history presentations as well as some humorous interludes. I had the honor of presenting the Return The Favor Award to Dawana Harris-Bey as she was unable to be in Pittsburgh. The "Senator" arrives and greets the assembly with his amazing powers of perception - the photo says it all.

Past US JCI President Frank Butler did my introduction with a repeat of a story that I told on him when I had the honor of seconding his nomination for President . It took him over 16 years but he did "Return the Favor" - Thanks Frank that was the best GOTCHA ever.

Following the 40th Anniversary festivities the VA Senate convened their business meeting. The agenda was quickly dispatched with all reports short and sweet as many of the folks had to get to the VA JC Foundation meeting at 3PM. We had a short time to socialize in the hospitality room before it was time to change into our formal attire and return to the Banquet Room for the Outstanding Young Virginians banquet and program.

There were 4 honorees including an 8 year old girl with some impressive qualifications. I was given the opportunity to participate in the presentation of 4 new Senatorships to some well deserving young Jaycees as well as the First Timer participants awards.

After the Banquet everyone packed themselves into the Senate Suite where the first order of business was a reception for the OYV Recipients where I presented a toast to them and their accomplishments. This reception lasted about 15 minutes then most of the Jaycees headed off to the dance in the ballroom. The next toast I presented was to the 4 new Senators and everyone raised their glass of champagne to them and their honor. President Ariel, VP Rod, JC liaison Sherry and myself retired to a private room with the new Senators for a short orientation into the VA Senate. I had a copy of our September Mentors magazine and a presidential pin for each of the new Senators.

Early flight to Manchester - another 3AM schedule - Denise was there to pick me up and we headed to Kennebunkport. We checked into the hotel and did not see any other early arrivals so we went to the Pilot House for dinner as it was recommended by the hotel staff. I had no choice but to order a whole Maine lobster and was it good - and only $14.95 to boot. We returned to the hotel, had a cup of decaf coffee, watched a bit of the telly and went to sleep.

Our morning view from the hotel was spectacular - looking out to the inlet with the local fishing boats in the calm waters was picture perfect. We had breakfast at the hotel as it was included in the room cost - it was one of the best breakfast buffets I have had with REAL beef hash (not canned). There were a few other early arrivals at breakfast and everyone seemed to have differing plans for the day. Denise and I drove along the coast, north to Portland. We stopped in Ocean City which was pretty quiet at this time of the year but I expect that it is bustling during the tourist season. All the rides were quiet and many of the shops and stores were closed. We walked a bit along the beach and picked up some shells. We found some very large clam shells and even some with the critters still inside so they ended back in the surf. We ended up in Portland for lunch at Amatos Original Italian Sandwich shop where we did partake of their specialty. I had planned to have a local beer but I could not drink it in the cafe since they had a license to sell beer but not to consume on the premises. We visited a few other beaches and a small lighthouse converted into a lighthouse museum. We returned to the hotel in time for the opening of the hospitality room.

We spent the late afternoon meeting those present and those that were arriving. Lots of hospitality, cocktails and snacks. All the elected officers were there and we went out to dinner as a group accompanied by a few other Senate friends, seafood of course. I assembled the officers for a short meeting to discuss possible discussions at the Joint Boards meeting at the World Congress in Tunisia. We also had a discussion on a variety of issues before returning to the hospitality room until time to retire - around midnight.

Breakfast in the hotel again followed by a presidents to presidents meeting where I had the opportunity to meet with the Region 1 state presidents from Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and regional VP, Sue Zetoff. I presented those presidents with their pips, and pin. The memorial service was begun where I delivered a short message then led the creed.

The Region 1 meeting then was convened where I had another opportunity to address the membership explaining the meaning behind the logo, hospitality and the scholarship program. Since I would be speaking again at the Banquet I reserved discussing the RTF program until then. I presented Sue with her pin and flag set as Regional VP - The first VP to get the set. After the Regional meeting was adjourned we had some time to spend in the hospitality room prior to meeting for the trolley tour of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

We saw many of the old "Grand Hotels" that were still in operation, the Bush compound, both old and new homes in the area, a Buddhist temple and some wonderful scenery while being entertained with the stories of our driver and tour guide. Returning to the hotel and hospitality before getting into our costumes for the Banquet.

The Banquet was a hoot as the vast majority of Senators were in costume, some very ingenious. I. of course, was Captain Picard while Denise was really Wanda the Witch. I was introduced by Maine president Denis Pratt then I spoke on the priority of the RTF program, our relationship with the US Jaycees and some of the goals of Jeff Lank, incoming president of the Jaycees.

I was presented with a coffee mug, homemade jelly and a nice framed nautical picture from Denis and a very decorative blanket from Sue. I presented Denis his pip, pin and flag set in appreciation of the Maine Senate's hospitality. The MC and featured speaker was Wayne Mitchell who did a great job in describing some of the activities of the Jaycees in the past and what could be possible with the Jaycees of the future. I had a very nice conversation with him after the meeting and was quite impressed. I began saying my goodbyes through the banquet room and dance then retired to pack and catch a few winks before heading to the Airport early next morning.

We left the hotel just after 6Am for our hour plus drive to Manchester airport, returned the rental car and caught a plane to BWI. We had lunch during our layover then on the plane back to Oakland

I have been attending the Fall Frolic for a number of years and this is perhaps one of the best. Thanks to President Denis and the Maine Senate for a great time.

I met Wendy, who had flown in from San Jose, and our Pilot, Phil Wilson, at the Portland Airport and headed to Hood River for the Border Bash weekend. We checked into our room then joined the early arrivals in the hospitality room for a visit. More folks arrived throughout the evening and everyone was greeted with much happy conversation and hospitality.

The day started with breakfast in the Hotel Restaurant then onward to the Oregon and Washington State meetings. Meetings were over in about an hour and everyone then assembled in the hospitality room for the “BIG” game between the Oregon Beavers and the Washington Huskies. Oregon was the Victor and Angie had to endure a bit of grief from the Oregon Senators – would it be any other way???

To escape from the “beating” Angie, Wendy and I went to town and the “NAKED WINERY” where we sampled such erotically named wines as Foreplay Chardonnay, Penetration Cabernet, Cougar Muscat and Orgasmic Barbera. Most were actually decent wines. Wendy and Angie bought a few bottles although I planned to carryon my luggage so I passed on a purchase.

We returned to the hotel in time to dress a bit more appropriately for dinner before returning to the hospitality room for more college football, conversation and hospitality.

This was one of my more challenging trips. I was off my normal routine and had my bags in the garage ready to load into the car. I moved the car out to load the bags when the phone rang. After a phone conversation I jumped in the car and fought the rush hour traffic to the Oakland Airport. When I got close to the airport I decided to check the address of the parking lot so I stopped and opened my trunk to get the paperwork. SURPRISE!!!! I had neglected, in my rush, to load my suitcases! I rushed back home hoping I could cut the time for the round-trip and make my flight – No such luck as it was still rush hour time and the traffic was horrendous.

When I got home and realized that there was no way I could catch my flight I went online and lo there was a flight that left just one hour after the original flight. I called Oracio Galvan who was providing the ride from San Diego to Tecate, and he indicated that the delay would be no problem. I made sure my bags were in the car and, again, drove to the airport and made this flight with time to spare. When I arrived in San Diego and picked up my bags I found that Oracio was still negotiating delivery of his bags to Tecate since they had been incorrectly routed to Portland.

We had an uneventful drive to Tecate, checked into the Jaycees hotel and unpacked. Oracio and some of his friends were hosting a party at the Diana Bar downtown. We started off with a shot of Tequila (Imagine that!) then there was a keg of Tecate beer. Many of the Tecate Jaycees and Senators arrived throughout the afternoon to share some conversation. Many spoke English although with my limited Spanish and many of their limited use of English we got along very well and pretty well understood each other.

We then made our way to the Tecate Brewery and their Beer Garden for the Jaycees welcome party. More beer and some Tacos made from Pork and Beef BBQ’d on the premises in hand made Tortillas cooked on the spot as well. We lasted until around 11 PM when I had enough Beer and needed to crawl into bed. I slept pretty well considering that the bed was relatively hard.

I arose at 6:30 AM and met Rosario at 8 to go over to the Senate hotel for Breakfast. After Breakfast (where they presented me with a Mexico Senate shirt) we all boarded a bus for the day’s excursion through the wine country. We stopped at L.A. Cetto Winery where we had a personal tour and wine tasting. There was Bread and Cheese for us between wine tastings. The wine was excellent, even the White varieties which is not my favorite. We then re-boarded the bus for the next step which was lunch in Ensenada. I sat with John (ASAC President) and Ximena Moreno and Carmen Mendoza as they both spoke English. The wine flowed before, during and after lunch. The lunch was excellent consisting of a fantastic onion soup followed by an excellent fish dish and dessert. I caught perhaps 30 percent of the conversation but Carmen and John filled in the blanks.

Carmen gave me a special bottle of wine which was made by her Daughter and signed by her as well as the winery owners.

After lunch we again boarded the bus for the trip back to Tecate with everyone in great spirits (literally). Of course on the trip back a bottle or two of Tequila magically appeared. They were dispatched in a very short time and a lively discussion followed to decide if we would make a stop for more Tequila. There were some clearer heads that made the decision that we had all consumed enough alcohol and we proceeded to drive to Tecate.

The bus arrived at the Senate hotel and Rosario then delivered me back to the Jaycee hotel. I changed into my suit and attended the short Jaycee meeting which took about ½ hour and included a few speeches and a short business session. The Jaycees then adjourned to a pool party while the Senate went to Cava Garcia and their wine tasting room for our private party with more wine and snacks. There was a string band with 9 Guitars and one Base entertaining us with very good music and song. There was much visiting within the group while the band played and the wine continued to flow. After an hour or so dinner was ready which consisted of PAELLA – Rice, Shrimp and Meat cooked outside in a huge metal “Platter” somewhat like a flattened Wok. More wine and music from the band until 10PM when they departed to a resounding applause.

The next entertainment was a couple with a synthesizer with both singing some songs. This brought everyone (including me) up on their feet and dancing for the rest of the evening. I had to learn – or at least attempt – dancing Mexican Style - sort of a Flamenco step. And me with bad knees. We all left around midnight for some well needed sleep.

Saturday October 17, 2009 MY BIRTHDAY

Up around 7AM and took a Taxi to the Senate Hotel for Breakfast followed by a tour of the Tecate Brewery. I did not know that they wanted us all to be in our "official" Senate shirts for photographs that afternoon so Carmen ran me back to my hotel so I could retrieve the shirt.

After the Brewery tour the Mexico Senate meeting was called to order. It was all in Spanish so I had to pay close attention to get some idea of what was being covered, although I understood only a fraction of the conversations. I did have the opportunity to address the membership and spoke about my Road to the Future theme and what it meant. I included a “commercial” about the Concord 2010 convention, gave out registration forms and encouraged the Mexico Senators to attend.

John Moreno spoke about ASAC and we both showed solidarity for better communication among the countries. I wore my Senate shirt to the meeting and after adjournment I changed into the Mexico Senate shirt and we all drove out to a picnic area for photographs - and there were many taken. Kevin Alson was there as JCI Vice President and made sure that everyone knew that it was my birthday. Every lovely Female Jaycee gave me a kiss on the cheek and wished me a Happy Birthday.

I then had photos taken with all the girls. Tough Job!!!!

Many formal photos were also taken both with the JCI Senators, the Jaycees and a combination of Senators and Jaycees. We then had a lunch of four kinds of Burritos, Peppers and lemonade (no wine here). Carmen and her Brother then dropped me off at my hotel for a short rest before getting ready for the Dinner and Gala later that evening.

I did not know that the Senate was going to surprise me with a Limo for the ride to the Gala, although it was about a half hour late and I hitched a ride with Dave Campbell. During dinner I was seated with some of the Mexico Past Presidents and the incoming president. Time was short so I had to make my gift presentations short. I gave pins to Rosario and Carmen for being my chauffeurs and interpreters, pins to the outgoing and incoming Jaycee presidents. Pin and cap to incoming Senate president Fernando and a pin, cap and flag set to outgoing president Raul Ibarra. Dinner was served about 10:15 and was very good for banquet chicken. Our waiter kept my wine glass full throughout the evenings activities. The group danced, talked and had a great time until 2 AM when the party started to break up. Of course there was another photo session with the birthday boy (namely me) and all the girls dressed in their finery – again a tough job.

Denise picked me up at my home at 4AM (again) for our flight to Denver from Oakland. Changed planes in Denver then spent an hour getting deiced. After deicing the motors would not start – seems that they sprayed way too much fluid into the motors and it took time to clear them. This meant that we were about an hour late getting into Omaha. Lea Ann and Bill Smith were patiently waiting – at least Lea Ann was patient. Picked up the rental car and arrived in Sioux Falls around 5:30 PM. We were met by Herb Koerner and showed to the suite that we were to share with he and his wife. What a great room, the "living room" was quite large and the bed rooms spacious.
Mike and Carol Enefer from Canada were already checked into the hotel. South Dakota president Arnie Stinson arrived with a bottle of Jack for the suite and then 8 of us went to dinner. After dinner we drove to the Falls which was lighted and very pretty nestled in a bed of red granite. We did not stay long as it was getting very cold outside. We all went back to the hotel where everyone gathered in the suite for some cheer and conversation.

We arose for breakfast with Herb in the hotel restaurant and then he introduced us to the hotel staff. After breakfast Herb drove us to the EROS (Earth Resources Observation and Science Center) there were interactive displays of photo satellites showing the evolution from balloons to space satellites. It was a short visit as Herb had to be back for an airport pickup. Arnie was scheduled to take us but his wife, Helen, went to an appointment and had his car keys. As we arrived from EROS Arnie was there and we were off to lunch then to a local winery where we found that the owner was a former Jaycee and even from the same chapter as Arnie. The wines in South Dakota are pretty much in the German Style which is a bit sweeter even the "dry" wines. His wife was also a Jayceette. He was proud to show us his facility and was in the process of crushing the last of this year's harvest. We left and went to another winery and although the tasting room was open we could not find anyone to assist us and we opted to return to the hotel.
On the way back Arnie pulled into a Tractor Supply store which turned out to have almost everything imaginable. His purpose was to buy me a western style hat. We guessed at the hat size of Mike, Bruce and Steve and he bought each of them a dark hat – mine was white. He also found a red hat for Denise so she could attend the Red Hats meeting. Denise also found a very pretty silver necklace, in a tractor supply no less. We then returned to the hotel. Many more folks had arrived including VP Randy Young who instructed us to gather in the lobby to go to dinner – more food – just what I need. After dinner I joined Randy in visiting the First Timers, PIE and TIE meetings.

Steve arrived a bit later and the Exec Team met in the suite to discuss some issues including plans for our conference call to be early December. We spent the rest of the evening socializing in the Hospitality lounge.

The day started with a Memorial Service followed by the Region 6 business meeting. I gave a short presentation and gave out pins to the state presidents that had not yet received them. Arnie formally presented me with my hat and I received gifts from some of the other states in the Region.

The afternoon included lunch and time in the hospitality lounge until around 4PM dressed for the banquet and stopped by a reception for the Canadian guests hosted by Ambassador Phyllis Bowers,. Then to the Past South Dakota Presidents reception until time to assemble for dinner. More gifts were exchanged and everyone received a commemorative champagne glass. After dinner everyone visited among the group and told some very funny stories.

Up in the morning and visited with Herb and Joel until time to meet with Lea Ann and Bill to drive back to the Omaha Airport. We left them off at the terminal then went to a small diner for lunch then returned the rental car and checked in for our flight home.

The end of the Fall BOD in Pittsburgh was only a few days from the Maryland Wine Fest, and too close to fly home and immediately return, so I accepted the invitation to spend the week with Senators in the area.

I left the Fall BOD hotel with Harry and Sandy Kolodner for the trek to their home in Delaware. After a full weekend I was pretty sleepy but managed to stay awake during the drive with pleasant conversation. Upon arrival at their home we settled in and Harry cooked some Tuna steaks and an accompanying salad which was outstanding and just light enough for an early bed time.

Harry had coffee ready when I got up and around 9:30AM we set off to visit the Longwood Gardens. We had a fabulous lunch at the Terrace Restaurant then strolled through the conservatory. They are renovating the huge pipe organ and have much of the workings displayed - what a grand instrument. The gardens are part of the du Pont estate and are referred to as the world's premier horticultural showplace, and it is all of that. It rained pretty hard so we did not see the outside gardens but the inside was magnificent. The rain stopped just as we were heading back to the car. We returned to the Kolodner home and again had a great dinner, checked on my emails and after a few cocktails headed for bed.

Coffee was ready again as I rose and packed by luggage for my next host. We launched at 8:30AM to meet Danny Nuessle who was my tour guide for Gettysburg. We arrived at the visitors center and viewed the displays of firearms used during the Civil War until it was time for the Cyclorama show. What a grand painting. I do not know the exact size but it must have been over 150 feet long and around 50 feet high. Formed in a circle which placed the viewer in the center of the battle, seemingly on an overlooking hill. The action was highlighted entirely by the manipulation of the lighting. The room was darkened and the action started as the lighting mimicked a sunrise over the battlefield. flashes of light hit the painting simulating cannon fore exploding with all the appropriate sounds. the lighting became brighter as the simulated day progressed and the painted combatants seemed to actually be moving, The sounds of gunfire and shouting men made the vision seem very real. There was even some lighting tricks that showed smoke rising from a cannon ball explosion. They stimulated all of the senses during this brief experience.
Danny and I took in more of the museum before deciding to go into town for lunch. Time was getting short so we did not venture outside to the battle fields and monuments. This would probably take a few days and is a good reason to return.

Lunch was at the Farnsworth House tavern where the staff dressed in period costumes and served on Pewter plates. The building still had over 100 bullet holes in the brick walls as this was the location where Confederate Sharpshooters were sheltered while Union soldiers fired at them. We then drove to Judy and Danny's home where we could change and meet up with Judy before leaving for Anne Johnson's home and a Reception by the Virginia Senate in my honor.

And what an honor it was. There were many Maryland and Virginia Senators there and it was appropriately decorated with, what else, Star Trek photos and memorabilia. I learned later that Art Esenberg had supplied all the decorations. Senator Bob Lindholm, the second president of the US JCI Senate was there and presented me with a 15th anniversary book which had much of the early history of the US Senate. This was a very relaxing gathering and Virginia Senate president Ariel and her folks did an outstanding job. Lots of food and drink as well as conversation and fellowship. Of course there were plenty of photo opportunities. My everlasting thanks for a wonderful evening.

Presidential Assistant Jeanne Vanderhyde joined us there and I was transferred into her care. We returned to her home near Baltimore.

I slept late and when I awoke Jeanne was already gone to work. This was a down day where I pretty much lazed around. I went for a walk in the morning then spent the rest of the day checking and answering the ton of emails that had accumulated over the past few days. Denise had noticed that I had booked my flight back from the British Drumming out for the Wednesday after the winter BOD so I called the airlines and rebooked for the Wednesday prior to the BOD. I called Wendy so she could do the same since the airlines would not allow me to rebook for her. I found Star Trek Enterprise on the telly and watched that until Jeanne returned from work. We were off to dinner then back to her house where we watched some TV then retired for the evening.

I was up to say goodbye to Jeanne as she left for work then packed and was ready when Diane Baerveldt picked me up for the trip to their "Beach House". I unpacked and we left for a tour of the area. Stopped for lunch and had a salad and perhaps the best creamed clam chowder I had ever tasted. Then it was off to walk the 2.4 miles of the boardwalk. Diane drove us around the town and showed me where their original cabin was located. It was not an upscale development and Golf course. We stopped at a farmers market to get some fresh corn for dinner. Then back to the house just before John and Debbie Price arrived. We had a few cocktails while Diane cooked a great dinner - a glass or two of wine, some pleasant conversation with good friends, a romp on the floor with Tucker their dog (and the official entertainment committee,) then it was off to bed,

We were all up a bit before 9Am as we needed our rest before working the wine fest. Breakfast then off to Ocean City for our work shifts. Jeanne took the day off and joined up with us at the festival grounds. We had an hour or so before our work shift began so we imbibed in a bit of the "grape Juice" and a group of us went go to the Pizza Shack for lunch. We were in time to assume our assigned duties for the afternoon. My assignment was to apply wrist bands to all the attendees. It was quite fun joking with everyone. I worked that task for an hour and a half then was reassigned to one of the vendor booths to pour wine until 7PM and the close of the fest for the evening. The group of Senators headed to the Captains Galley restaurant home of the "Worlds Best Crab Cakes" so naturally I had to try them. After dinner the Senate hospitality room was open at the hotel where Calvin joined us. He had just driven down as he had to work all day Friday. We left to return to the Baervelt castle where we had cocktails and conversation until midnight.

Up and a leisurely breakfast on the porch. Calvin was on the early shift so he was soon on his way while the rest of us left around noon for our 1PM afternoon shifts. Jeanne and I did a shift with wrist bands and drink tickets until 4PM when we went for a sandwich with Harry. We were back for reassignment at 5PM and I was sent to the Beer booth to finish the day at 7PM. Everyone then gathered at the hospitality room where dinner was served with Lasagna, salad, shrimp and all the trimmings. Maryland president Letha Grimes presented me with a Maryland shirt, a hummingbird sculpture and a photo of a hummingbird that she had taken from her window at home. I returned the favor by presenting her with her pips, pin, flag set and the new logo cap.

Everyone was quite tired after two days of working the wine fest so we departed around 9PM. Back at the house we enjoyed each others company until 11:30 when my weary eyes told me that it was time to call it a night.

Jeanne and I arose early and packed our luggage into her car for a fast getaway to the airport after brunch. All the Senators began to gather for brunch around 9:30 and we enjoyed their company and had a group photo taken before Jeanne drove me to BWI and my flight home.

What a great week with president Lethia and all our Senate friends. I will always have fond memories of these friendships.

Another 3 Am morning to meet Denise at 4Am for our flight to Pittsburgh. We were picked up by Lloyd and Connie Lingle for transport to the hotel where we checked in and got ready to meet everyone at 6:30 for dinner. There was more early arrivals than could be seated at one table so we were a bit spread about but all had a great time anyway. The specialty sandwiches, which I had to try, were a bit different as they put cole slaw and french fries ON or IN the sandwich. They were actually very good and I loved the cole slaw. We returned to the hotel and Tess and Clarence had arrived. There had been some movement on the rental of the CA Foundation building so Wendy, Tess, Clarence and myself retreated to the Alvey room to discuss. Tess called David, our realtor, and gave him our counter proposal. We then went down to the hotel restaurant for a drink before retiring for the night. I had a great suite all to myself while Wendy and Denise had the connecting room.

Denise, Wendy and I had breakfast with Tess and Clarence before having the hotel shuttle take us to Walmart to pick up supplies for the presidential assistants gathering, the first ladies reception and for Herbie and the political advisors meeting. We called the hotel and they sent the shuttle to pick us up and return to the hotel. After stowing all the supplies the shuttle driver was kind enough to take us to the Harmony Village. This was built by the Harmonist society that I had never heard of but in the early 1800's George Rapp broke off from the Lutheran church and formed his own society in Germany where they were so persecuted that they all traveled to the US where they were the first settlers in Pennsylvania. After about ten years they moved to Illinois and built a settlement but after a few years there decided to return to Pennsylvania where many of the buildings are preserved today. They believed that they were the last people to be on Earth and that Jesus would come to claim them. They were very industrious and built many manufacturing facilities which also became financially rewarding. After our guided tour of the area and an individual stroll we called the hotel for the shuttle to come and retrieve the group.

When we returned the hospitality room was opening and the early arrivals started to beam in. I met with Mike and Newton to discuss the Liaison duties and goals for the year. The relationship with the Jaycees is doing well and that is one of our major priorities.

Started the morning getting things ready for the presidential assistants meeting at 10 AM. During the meeting I gave Denise and Wendy their new jackets with my logo and had gifts for the PA's as well. They all received a silver necklace with the Turkish good luck charms (the all seeing eye) as well as a few other items. We discussed the agenda for the weekend and each PA's duties. We had time to just relax and chat for a while and finish off the mimosas as well.

At 11Am the California Delegation came up for a short meeting where I had the opportunity to express my thanks for their attendance and support. There was also some conversation about the 2010 Concord meeting and how the presentation would be handled at the business meeting. Everyone worked on the food and champagne before dispersing. We went to the hospitality room where Frank Butler was there and was waiting for Bill Cheesman to arrive. When Bill arrived we retired to the hotel bar to have a short talk among old friends. The committee meetings were starting so Denise and I made our rounds to each meeting for my short Rah, Rah talk. We finished just in time to make the bus to the Baseball game.

The game lasted a bit long and I had to get the Officers and VP's back for the Executive Committee meeting. At the 7th inning we had one of the two buses loaded to get us back to the hotel. There were also may others that wished to leave early and there was 28 on the return bus. Convened the meeting at 10:30 (1/2 hour late) and the meeting went smoothly until Bid Review. During the Bid Review Committee meeting the Florida committee wanted to raise the registration fee to $65 since they had printed that amount on their form. The committee voted (not unanimously) to increase. The executive committee vote was a 50/50 split so it came to me to break the tie. I am bound by the bylaws and policy which states that the registration fee will be between $50 and $60 unless a waiver is requested. No such waiver was requested when the meeting was submitted to the BOD for approval and the contract was signed at the $60 rate. Florida had sent an initial document that confirmed that they would abide to all policy requirements and there was not any request to deviate from bylaws when proposed. My vote was to not approve the rate increase. Registration stands at $60. Ron Whitmore was furious but the rest of the Florida delegation accepted the decision and will put on a great meeting as always. The Exec meeting was adjourned in an hour. Time for a short stay in the hospitality room then to bed,

Up, had coffee in the suite and prepared for the BOD meeting at 9Am. We convened about 5 minutes late due to some nonworking sound system. Katina had set up for a display of the logo and the theme music to start the meeting but we had to dispense with the music. The Regional Vice Presidents beamed into the meeting room all dressed in Spock headgear and they played the part to the hilt while giving their reports.

The meeting went well and we adjourned by 11:30AM.

Lunch was served in the hospitality room where I did partake with a few hundred of my close friends. I accepted an invitation to say a few words to the DC Senate meeting at 1:30PM. They have upwards of 48 members now although they are all dual members. They just charge the $5 national dues to become a member. I had a chance to get to the suite for an hour to lie down and relax until time for the evenings festivities. Wendy and I stopped by the Canadian Reception at 5 PM then proceeded to the banquet room at 5:30PM. After dinner we finished all the Foundation awards then during the presidential raffle drawing one of the entertainment group had a heart attack (he eventually died at the hospital). This really put a damper on the festivities but WOW how quickly the nurses and EMT's responded to that gentleman's emergency. They continued to administer CPR until the paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital.

I adjourned the meeting immediately and asked everyone to move to the hospitality room and everyone did so quickly. Chaplain Larry Bohn said a prayer for those assembled in the hospitality room and I thanked everyone for their caring and concern for someone they had never met and for the most part did not know. What a caring family of Senators.

The evening ended on an upbeat note and everyone was having a great time with all their friends. I went around to each table and thanked them for coming while also saying my goodbyes.

An easy flight this day. We did not have to leave for the airport until 6:30 for our flight to St. Louis. Bonnie Hart picked Denise and I up at the airport and we went to the Hart House where Ed had cooked up a great dinner. We had a leisurely evening visiting before time for bed.

We started the morning with Ed driving us to Micky D's for coffee before descending upon the JCI World Headquarters. Not much action in the building except for the clerical staff so Ed gave us the 5 cent tour and we took a few photos. As we were leaving Edson Kodama, JCI Secretary General, just arrived and we chatted for a while as well as took the opportunity for a photo or two. Our next stop was a tour of the Budweiser Brewery where we completed the tour with a glass or two of beer. We returned to the Hart House to retrieve our luggage then picked up Bonnie at work.

Ed drove us to Jefferson City where we checked into the hotel then off to Madisons Cafe for dinner with 12 other Senators. We returned to the hotel and the Senate hospitality room. We joined the Jaycee First Timer meeting and had the opportunity to speak to the first time Jaycee attendees. After the meeting we remained and chatted with the first timers on a one-to-one basis and signed their competition forms. Back to the hospitality room until time to rest my weary bones.

Up early and Bonnie stopped by and informed me that the Jaycees had two folks giving the same training class and would I mind speaking to the group at lunch in place of a training program. We then had breakfast in the hospitality room before Bonnie convened the Missouri Senate meeting. I gave my normal spiel and presented bonnie with her pips, pin and flag set. She was very generous and presented me with a letter of welcome from the Governor, a Missouri flag certified as flown over the State Capital, a Missouri Backpack, the official Missouri Vest with both of Bonnie's presidential pins attached.

After the meeting was adjourned we joined the Jaycees at their luncheon where I was their Keynote Speaker. I spoke on the importance of ASKING potential members to join our organization as well as the Senate RTF program where the Senate stands ready to assist in the growth of the Jaycee organization. It seemed to be well received. The Jaycee presidential elections were next on the agenda and it was a contested race. After the speeches and vote tallying the new Missouri president is Paul Myers. You know that there has to be more than one Myers as president too bad he does not know how to correctly spell Meyers.

There was time for a short nap before getting ready for the Awards Banquet. Jeff Lank, candidate for US Jaycees president (the only candidate at this point) spoke to the masses about the future of the Jaycees in the US (fits well with our Bridge to the Future). Some of his plans are to include Senators and past Jaycees (over 40) as part of his national team to mentor Jaycees and Jaycee chapters. I had the chance to speak with Jeff after dinner about his plans and how the US Senate's plans can blend together. I also had a few photos taken for the cover of the December Mentors publication. Hospitality, of course, until time for bed.

Up and packed in the morning before attending the Jaycee business meeting. After the meeting we had a leisurely drive back to St. Louis and Ed and Bonnie treated Denise and me to lunch. We had to stop by their house to retrieve an item left by Denise. Ed gave me a set of all three of his presidential pins before we left for the airport and our flight home.

The Missouri Senate and Senators are really great hosts, Thank you all.

I drove down to Oxnard with Herb and Joe A as passengers (see what respect the president has in his/her home state). We checked into the hotel then we were off to the hospitality room until time to head out to dinner at an al fresco pizzeria. The Senate Board meeting began as soon as everyone returned from dinner and there was a lively discussion of a copyright infringement claim charged to the Senate. The Tiger Corp. meeting followed and was quite well attended by some folks that we have not seen in many moons. Probably because one of our long time Jaycee members and current Terrible Tiger, Brian Omatsu, was to receive his Senatorship that evening at the corps meeting. Back to the hospitality room for a while before retiring for the night.

The morning began with the CA Senate breakfast meeting where Region X VP Carolyn Smith was in attendance and spoke to the group. I had the opportunity to speak as well and present president Karen Talamantes with her pips, pin and flag set. She presented me with one of the California Senate shirts for this year.

After the meeting the Foundation officers that needed to be on the check signature card assembled and went down to the local bank so we could all be together to verify our signatures (hooray Patriot Act). We thought that we could get this done quickly and get back in time for a Foundation meeting. This was not to be and it took about three hours go get everything completed. Many of the trustees that had driven in for the meeting had to leave before we completed our business at the bank so an informal meeting was held in the lounge area. Following the foundation meeting we had a meeting of the Concord 2010 committee then a short time in the hospitality room before driving to "The Greek at the Harbor" for dinner. Some wine, good food and some entertainment by the staff at the restaurant. I had to leave early as I was requested by the Jaycees to count votes during the elections - Kevin Alson drove me back while the others stayed for more entertainment. I left so fast that I did not pay my share of the wine but took care of that later.

The Jaycee elections were twofold, First was the issue of replacing the president for the current year. It seems that president Matt Bromand had to resign and per bylaws the COB takes over until an election can be held to select a new president for the remainder of the term. Claudia Sheridan was elected to fill in for the remainder of 2009 while Paul Farmer from Salinas was elected as the new president to take over the reins on January 1.

The theme for the weekend was the 70's and you should have seen the hippies that showed up. VP CJ Jorif had a special version of the 70's trivia game modeled after the Jeopardy TV show which became quite rowdy. As president KT said, "there was peace and love everywhere" make up your own story.

I was up at 3:00 AM to catch BART to the airport as I was traveling alone this trip. I arrived at the airport with little time to spare. A layover in Minneapolis gave me a chance to grab some lunch before boarding my flight to Minot, SD. I arrived about 10 minutes late and Treasurer Bruce Geddes was there to pick me up and get me to the hotel which was only 5 minutes away. I and Bruce enjoyed a couple of Scotches until Angie and Marilyn arrived and took us to a Chinese buffet for dinner. Afterward we helped put pins on the registration lanyards and mingled until around 11Pm when I sauntered off to bed.

Up at 8Am and met the group to go out to the Golf course. After all the Golfers T'd off I helped put up the tents, moved tables and arranged the site for the meting and lunch. Most of the Golfers were in by the time the steaks were grilled and the meeting started. Denise arrived just before lunch and during the meeting gave an update on the 2010 meeting in Concord. I had the chance to speak to the group and was presented with a Crib board, Tie and some additional gifts. I presented ND president Jim VanEckhout with his pips, pin and flag set.

After the meeting we returned to the hotel where each past ND JCC president hosted a hospitality table which had displays of memorabilia and scrapbooks from their year. There was lots of food and drink. I had more than I needed and was soon off to bed.

Up on Saturday morning and Michelle led Denise,Randy and I off on an adventure with Bruce doing the driving.. Our first stop was the North Dakota "pile of rocks" in Rugby- actually an obelisk marking the geographical center of the North American continent. Our second stop was the "Turtle". this is a very large image of a turtle constructed with wheel rims welded together. Randy and I clambered up on the structure for a photo or two. Stop number three was at the International Peace Gardens on the border between Canada and the US. Needless to say we needed our passports to get back to the US of A. We all took a stroll through the gardens and had a box lunch that the hotel had prepared for us along with soft drinks.

Upon returning to the border crossing we were instructed to drive the vehicle inside of the inspection building. We were then led into a waiting room while the vehicle was searched. We were also required to surrender our passports (good thing we all had one) and fill out an immigration form. Nothing of interest was found so we were released. I'm not sure but perhaps the fact that we had two from California, one from North Dakota, One from Ohio, and one person from Minnesota in a vehicle with Montana plates might have led them to question our motives.

We arrived back at the hotel in time to dress in all our formal finery and get to the reception preceding the Banquet. The majority of the banquet focused on the Senate. Ten Senatorships were presented and it was quite a big deal. All the Senators lined up around the room (almost halfway around) and as each new Senatorship was presented they walked the line and were congratulated by every Senator in attendance. They each took their place in line as the next Senatorship was presented. The new ND Jaycee president was sworn in, US JCC President John Weber spoke as well as past US JCC president Mike Faller. I had the opportunity to speak and presented president John Weber with my communicator pin. The evening continued with dancing and socializing until around midnight.

Up Early (again) for our flight to Pittsburgh where John & Debbie Price picked Wendy and me up at the airport. We stopped on the way to Wheeling WV. for a photo Opportunity with the Veterans Bridge spanning the Ohio River between Weirton, WV and Steubenville, Ohio. The bridge carries six lanes of US Rte 22. It is what is known as a cable-stayed girder design, and was opened to traffic in 1990. The single inverted "Y" tower that supports the span rises 360 feet above the river. The span is nearly 2,000 feet long. We then had dinner on the deck of Uncle Pete's restaurant with an overview of the river. John took us on a tour through some of the town of Wheeling with it's many old Victorian homes. That evening at the Price's home we shared some wine and a video of an old MAI meeting with many familiar faces. John Price and Larry Richmond in drag was the highlight. It was a spoof on a beauty queen pageant the queen was appropriate but the beauty was questionable. John did a recitation of Casey at the Bat, in a queenie dialog of course, which had me rolling on the floor. What a great act..

We had breakfast at the Price diner. Debbie was not feeling quite well so she stayed home while John gave us the royal tour of Wheeling including a park with wonderful displays of flowers, all nurtured on site in a large greenhouse. We then beamed down to the waterfront for a photo of a the Wheeling Suspension Bridge spanning the main channel of the Ohio River between downtown Wheeling, West Virginia and Wheeling Island. Completed in 1849, it is the first bridge to span the Ohio River, and the oldest suspension bridge in the world that is still operating.

John phoned Debbie and she was feeling much better so we returned to pick her up and proceeded to the next stop which was the Grave Creek Indian Mound complex. John and I climbed to the top while the "girls" watched our prowess from below. Our next stop was the retired West Virginia State Penitentiary where we joined a tour of the facility. Sure not a place I would like to spend any time. There was a surprise in the old visitation room - A large painting of the Jaycee Shield on the wall from the former prison chapter. Our next stop was at the Landing Restaurant for a beer and small lunch. On the way back to the Price home we passed a Dairy Queen and the urge to stop for some cool refreshment was overwhelming and we gave in to our desires. Back at the house we decided that none of us were very hungry so we packed the car and headed to Bridgeport and our hotel for the night.

We met up with WV president Rick Rutter and we were off to a chinese buffet for dinner. As we arrived at the restaurant I received a call from past US JCC president Denise O'Neil with concerns about Senator interference with the Wyoming Jaycees. I will look into what the problem might be through Region 9 VP Angie Struttmann. Back to the hotel and we met in Rick's room for a few cocktails before retiring for the night.

Wendy and I met Rick for breakfast and then he took us to Prickets fort where we met some very knowledgeable folks dressed in period costumes and demonstrating how folks went about their daily chores. We visited Morgan Cabin as well which was the home of the first settler in West Virginia. We returned to the hotel to pick up our luggage as well as the bar, stored in Rick's room, for transport to Melkaus Manor and the WV Senate Steak Fry.

The food was good, the friends were jovial and the hospitality wonderful. I met Senator 3151 named KC he is 85 years young and a great guy. I had the opportunity to speak to the assemblage during the meeting an presented Rick with his Pips, Pin and Flag set. Rick presented me with a WVU Jersey and Cap which I am to wear while in Pittsburgh. Conrad presented me with a bottle of wine.

We transferred our bags to EJ and Linda Miller's car and they took us to the Hampton Inn in Pittsburgh for Saturday night. The Inn is near the Airport for tomorrows travel.

Up at 2:45 AM to be ready for Denise to pick me up at 3:30 for an early morning flight to Louisville. Gary and Anne picked us up and during the drive we had a quick drive through a beautiful park, then through the Jim Beam Distillery (where Gary works) and to the hotel. We had a chance to catch a quick nap before meeting everyone in the lobby at 7:00 PM for the evenings festivities.

Gary and Anne took us through the town of Bardstown on the way to the "Barn" where all the weekend events are held. To call this a barn is quite a misnomer as it is a very nice house built back from the road and on a hilly slope. It is a two story getaway with a very LARGE side patio. It is covered and has a large fireplace on one end. across one side is a long bar and the other side is open and looks over a small lake. There is a Golf Green just on the other side of the lake and is used frequently to display the driving prowess of the Golfing guests.

Dinner was merely BBQ Steak, corn on the cob, garlic bread, salad; baked mashed potatoes. The Bar was appropriately stocked with some outstanding Bourbons while their signature drink was a Bourbon Slush. There was quite a crowd and we hung out until around 11 PM before heading back to the hotel and bed.

Up at 7:30 and had breakfast in the hotel then met Gary at 10 AM for a trek of the better Distilleries in the area. Our first stop was Makers Mark and true to form, Gary knew virtually everyone working there. We got our Bourbon passport and took the tour of the distillery. The grounds of the distillery are planted everywhere there is not a sidewalk or driveway and well taken care of. We finished the tour and were given a course on Bourbon tasting where we first tasted the pure distilled white liquid then tasted the finished product after aging in the barrel - what a difference. We later were treated to a tasting of a special blend - Mint Julep Bourbon. It seems that a bottle of this last tasting followed me home. Our next stop was Heaven Hill distillery which makes a variety of different products. We toured this facility and had another tasting of their Bourbons. It seems that the non-whisky drinker, Denise, Is learning to appreciate good Bourbon.

Gary then took us to town and a small local restaurant in town which boasts the best Grilled Cheese in the country. It was a good choice, cheese, bacon & Tomato grilled to perfection. he took us back to the hotel to prepare for the evening party. I had a chance to check my emails and there were quite a few about the mentors publication and switching printers before the September issue. We had time to rest a bit before leaving for the barn. There was a big crowd this evening and everyone was enjoying the hospitality, friendships and the Bourbon slush's were very popular.

We met John (the pope) at :30 Am for a trip to the Cathedral which is the oldest diocese in the western United States (western as it was in that period). John gave us quite a spiel about the history and background of the Cathedral. We then went over to the "Old Kentucky Home" which was the inspiration for the song of that same name. A stylish home for the period with some grand gardens surrounding the building. I was not feeling particularly well so when the group went for Bar Burgers I went back to the hotel. After some Alka- Seltzer and a short nap I was feeling much better. Denise and the Selmers picked me up at 3PM for the drive back to the barn.

The Executive team met briefly and agreed to move to a new printer for the September issue of the Mentors. We then had another awesome dinner then got into the Kentucky meeting. I had the opportunity to speak to the group and present president Lois Evans with her Pips, Pin and flag set. She in turn, presented me with a book on "Weird Kentucky", a shot glass, Derby glass and a beautiful sun catcher. We partied until midnight when I said my goodbyes and was taken back to the hotel.

Since the shuttle van was rented from the Louisville Airport Denise and I took possession to deliver it back. We had some time so we became senatoristas and visited a few Civil War museums, had lunch at Talbots Tavern in town then off to the air[port to turn in the van and catch our flight home.

It would not take much to convince me to return as it was a great visit.

Wendy came up on Wednesday night for her reservation in the presidents room. We then left for the airport at 5:30 AM for an easy drive to the Airport. - had breakfast and boarded the plane for St. Louis. We were picked up by Susie and drove to her home where we met her husband Chris and headed out to Okawville and the Senate gathering. We stopped on the way and they treated us to dinner at a local restaurant which served way to much food. we resumed our drive to Okawville we found that the freeway had been transformed into a parking lot. Indications from a trucker was that there had been a bad accident and the road was closed indefinitely. We were detoured off the Freeway and took the scenic route through the rural communities.

We arrived safely at our destination and checked into the McAwin Mansion Bed & Breakfast where we were met by the owners Denny and Julie and shown our rooms. We dropped off our luggage and Susie and Chris drove us over to the Hospitality hotel. We had a great time meeting the early arrivals until time to head back to the B&B and a bit of sleep. President Gary offered to drive us but as it was only a couple of blocks Wendy and I decided that the walk would be good for us so off we went.

We had a chance to look over the B&B and it is quite quaint. My room was the Presidents Room - filled with political memorabilia (Joe A would go crazy). Wendy's room was the Pink Room or Princess (Go Figure), with many old decorations. I still have my nagging cough and even though I took some drugs I slept restlessly

Awake at 7:30 (5:30 my time) showered and dressed. Wendy was already up and had coffee made. We chatted for a while then Wendy went up to shower and dress for the days activities. Off to the headquarters hotel around 10:30 where we joined many of the attendees gathered on the hotel porch. We visited until 12:30 then all loaded into vehicles for a trip to the "Castle". We drove quite a way over back country roads before coming upon the Castle. This is one mans obsession to reconstruct a Civil War Fort from stones he removes from old house foundations and basements where the structure is being destroyed. He is doing this all by himself although he is either quite old or has way too many miles on him. Within the walls of the fort are many old buildings made of logs and/or hewn timbers that he has dismantled at the original site, marked each board and reassembled them within the walls of the fort. One of these buildings is an old one room house as would have been built by early settlers. It had a loft for children - one bed and a fireplace. There were many displays of old tools as would have been used by the early settlers - the scary thing is that i recognize and know the uses of most of them. There was also one building that contained scale models of buildings that existed in the town many years ago. He has perhaps one of the most extensive collections of Indian artifacts that I have ever seen. From Arrow heads, spear points to stone tools and cooking utensils.

We left the Castle and drove to the "Blue Room". I have heard about this special "attraction" and surely was not going to miss seeing it. It is a pretty dilapidated building that houses a bar and grill. I had a couple of Beers and ordered a BLT from the Grill which was very good. I am told that the Grill is one of the cleanest in the area. We returned to Okawville and the B&B to change shirts for the evenings festivities. Denny and Julie were sitting on the porch so Wendy and I sat and chatted with them until it was time to walk over to the hotel. They had dinner in the Hospitality room with pulled pork sandwiches and all the trimmings that accompany such a meal. Met with Admin. VP Mike concerning the Mentors publication and meeting issues. I also had the opportunity to spend some time with the first US JCI President Jim O'Connell and two past Illinois Presidents from that same era before heading back to the B&B for the night.

Denny and Julie served a great breakfast which we shared with Doug and Vicky Dempsey who is also residing at the B&B as well as Lea Ann Smith who shares a room with Wendy.

Back to the hotel at 11:15 for transportation to the Jaycee building and "BAR BURGERS". We had lunch and some free time until the meeting time of 3PM. Many folks took the opportunity to go shopping while others hit the Blue Room once again. Many of us remained and spent some time chatting and having a few cocktails, of course.

The meeting began with JDO "Crowning" me with a Gold and Jeweled head decoration. Then the serious stuff began with outgoing president Stephanie Pittenger and her year end awards and comments. Then there was the "Changing of the Shirts" which signaled the beginning of the new administration under incoming president Gary Hongsermeier. I had the honor of inducting their officers prior to Gary conducted the business of his new board. I then had the opportunity to address the members and make some special presentations.

I presented Ohio president Marilyn Jones with her presidential rank Pips and "communicator" pin as I did not make the Pig Roast and could not give them to her then. I presented a presidential pin to Susie and Chris for their service of transportation to/from the airport, JDO and Bev Olsen for local transportation, and of course to incoming president Gary his Pip and Pin as well as my special Flag display set.

I received a gift of an Illinois shirt as well as an Illinois Senate travel mug. Doug Dempsey presented me with his Region 5 shirt and a notebook with the region 5 logo. I presented him with his presidential communicator pin.

We returned to the hotel in time for the formal dinner. Wendy won the raffle for a 1.75 liter bottle of Jack Daniels but since we were flying she gave it to John Price who will bring it to Pittsburgh. After more hospitality back to the B&B for some sleep.

Awoke and packed before going downstairs for breakfast and our goodbye's to Denny and Julie, Vicky and Doug and Lea Ann. We walked to the hotel where we met Larry Ferguson and his wife for our ride back to the Airport. We arrived with 3 hours before our flight but the plane was further delayed. Ahhh, the joys of travel - does Joe's black cloud now follow me??. Since we now have a scheduled departure of 5:20 we have a new connection in Phoenix at 8:35 which will put us in at 10:30 and plenty of time to catch the BART back home.

When we arrived in Phoenix Wendy noticed that our original flight was still there so we boarded and arrived in Oakland at our originally scheduled time. Wendy's bag was already there so she was off for home while I waited until my bag was unloaded and arrived home 18 hours after waking up in Illinois.

I left home at 6:30 Am and found that I had only 1/4 tank of gas just past Orick, CA but I figured that I could make it to Klamath to gas up. I did not take into consideration the number of hills I had to climb. The gas light came on about half way so I became a bit anxious as but I arrived in Klamath and the gas station without incident. I checked in with the motel but the room would not be ready until around 4pm. With that I was off to the campground where a few of the early arrival campers were setting up their tents. Armand was, of course, assisting the Crescent City Jaycees in moving supplies into the hospitality tent. I gave them a hand setting up the lights as Armand was not allowed to get on the ladder. It was an entirely new tent made of white vinyl which sure does not have the personality of the old Army Squad Tent that has been used for over 30 years but it is much brighter and easier to assemble.

Who should show up but Jack Myers, what a pleasure to see him after so many years. Soon after that I found that another past CA Senate president, Bob Solis, was there as well with his lady, Penny.

I was informed by the Crescent City Jaycees that since I was staying at the same motel as Armand that I would be his chauffeur for the weekend - A job that I was happy to accept as we have been friends for close to 40 years. It was getting close to 4PM so we loaded Armand's gear into my car and headed to the motel. Armand was able to check in and get his room but my room was still not ready. Armand picked up my motel tab and we spent some time chatting in his room until my room was ready. I unpacked and we then returned to the camp ground where I found that Linda and Howard Howell had also arrived although I could not locate their motor home before the group left for dinner at the Steelhead Lodge.

All the meats at the Steelhead are cooked over an outside wood stoked grill and are awesome. I ordered my usual 1/2 chicken and rack of ribs which always leaves plenty for my "Doggie (or is it Dougie) Bag" and will last me the better part of a week - That's just how much food they serve. It is family style with a shared salad and bread, baked potato and vegetable. In addition they serve one of the largest "fish bowl" margaritas i have ever seen.

After dinner most of us returned to the campground although some went partying at the local pub. I helped Sandy put up her tent then went in search of "who and who2" (Howard and Linda). I found them in Pat and Leon Hatch's motor home where Howard had brought some of his wine which he makes in his cellar and a darn good wine it is. We then had to see Howard's new motor home as this is it's maiden voyage. It is just like my sisters motor home with the exception of a Queen bed instead of the twin beds in my sisters motor home. It was getting a bit late and I needed to get Armand to the motel so off I went to gather up my passenger.

Armand and I were up early and went to the Trees Restaurant for breakfast and a quiet visit before the days activities. We arrived back at the campground and spent the morning moving from campsite to campsite and chatting with the Jaycees and Senators that were up. The DGM was called to order and a bit of District business conducted. I had the honor of swearing in six new members of the Crescent City Jaycees and gave them each one of my presidential pins. Armand was presented with the Outstanding Senator of the Year award from the 2008-2009 Senate president Katina Repp and what a well deserved recognition it was. Armand has been the glue that has held the Crescent City Jaycees together during some very rough years - never giving up and now the chapter is quite alive and doing well.

The afternoon was spent enjoying the camaraderie of the Jaycees and Senators that were in attendance. Of course, a few beers, some wine and cocktails were consumed as well. Dinner was then served and was delicious as it always is. In addition to the hospitality Jaycees and Senators spend from 6 - 12 hours driving to Klamath for this outstanding Salmon Feed and have been doing so for more than 40 years. Fresh salmon (caught that day) cooked in the style of the Indians, skewered on redwood sticks and cooked over the radiant heat of a wood fire pit. It is served with all the salads, corn on the cob, fruit, green beans and desert of ice cream sundaes. There is also hot dogs and chicken for those that do not care for Salmon.

That evening the fire pit is stoked again and a White Elephant raffle is held with continual thievery happening as each new "gift" is received. It was a bit nippy out but the fire warmed everyone up. The wine and cocktails may have helped as well.

I was up early and delivered Armand to the campground so he could supervise the Jaycees in preparing breakfast - some had to be coaxed out of their sleeping bags while others were a bit quieter than they had been the night before. As is tradition, not a lot of sleep happens on Saturday night.

After breakfast, I said my goodbye's and hit the road for home. Thanks to the Crescent City Jaycees for another great weekend among the Redwoods.

This was my first trip as president of the US JCI Senate and I flew into Kansas City Airport for the Kansas JCI Senate Lynn Picnic.

The news flash is that the workers represented by the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) unions will vote tonight on whether to call a strike although it should not take affect until next week. I decided to take BART to the airport and arrived in plenty of time for my flight.

Kansas Senate president Kent picked me up for our ride to Lynn (3 hours) and the B&B where I would be staying with past president Jumper and Hilda. Kent left me his car and I had an hour or so to relax and refresh before returning to his home for some beer and BS with the early arrivals. I left the car there as it was only a 2 block walk between the B&B and his home.

Dinner was simple but very good, sandwiches, salad, chips and almost anything liquid. It was a very relaxing evening although the humidity was fairly high and warm - a challenge for this west coast guy.

I was the first awake so I made coffee and the B&B hostess (owner) came over from her adjacent home to bring an egg Frittata, fruit and scones. Juice, milk etc. was already in the refrigerator. Jumper was the next to wake and we sat on the porch having our coffee until Hilda was ready and breakfast was shared.

Jumper, Hilda and I set out on an adventure visiting a couple of nearby towns and a farmers market. We arrived back at Kent's in time for lunch. I had a pleasant surprise when past president, Don Robertson arrived and we sat under the trees for a good chat and a great joke. Region 8 VP Peggy Rider and her traveling companion Karen arrived and joined the gathering. About 5PM the Kansas Senate meeting started which lasted about an hour. I presented Kent with his flag set (although I had not yet received my order which had the Kansas flag) with the KS flag to be forthcoming. I received a gift of some Tribbles for my collection. Rob Wiley and Julie gave me some of their homemade soap as well as a new bug spray product.

Dinner was outstanding, Jumper brought some fantastic ribs which I dove into right away. There was also chicken wings, deep fried Talapia, Salads, spuds, and all the trimmings. Later that evening we all walked to the fairgrounds for a bit of entertainment. There was a great band albeit a bit loud. We sat to the side where the volume was a bit less, had some liquid refreshment, limited conversation (loud music) and a lot of friendship. We returned to Kent's until about midnight when I went back to the B&B. That night we were entertained by some spectacular lightning displays, thunder (of course) and some rain which cleared up before morning.

Up in the morning, showered and made coffee while Jumper washed the dishes. We were again visited by our hostess with a breakfast Quiche, melon and cinnamon ring. After breakfast we all packed up and returned to Kent's home to say our final goodbyes. Rob Wiley drove me back to the Kansas City airport for my flight home.

Thanks to president Kent and the Kansas JCI Senate for a great first trip. I was truly a King for the weekend.
